Because it is cheaper? With gateway the only downside will be Japanese language when browsing 3ds menu, and the price different is around 70-90 USD. I also managed to update it to 9.2 so I can say it is a nice bargain.
Wow, where did you order yours?
There's only about a $30 difference between the Australian and Japanese models on Play-Asia.
My comment was more directed to those who either hadn't ordered or who delayed so long that they're still in transit.

In which case an extra $30 would be a small price to pay for guaranteed Gateway compatibility.

Play-asia overcharges by a huge margin, that's why. Cheapest option is to just import it yourself, or nippon-yassan is much cheaper than play-asia. But they ship slowly and there's no reason to order a JP one now with 9.3 out.

Uh...No they don't? 3DS XL brand new in the US is $200, costs an extra $40 to import. Not huge markup at all.

The yen has fallen heavily vs the USD lately, so a New 3DS at approx ~22,000yen is now close to about $180.

Australian 3DS update is NOT being pushed at the moment, no notification etc. If you manually check, it will say there's an update.

So, since JP n3ds ships with 8.0 and gateway needs a 9.2, with no known carts with a 9.2 update, what firmware does the AUS n3ds ship with? I'm a little disappointed at the moment, as I was looking forward to the JP eshop, but I can still get the software on gateway I guess.

I ordered mine at Superufo.com. The price is 168usd. With delivery that is 188usd.
