Cloud backup services

this is not a thread for people to get more space on there Cloud backup services. so please keep it that way.

anyway, i wanted to know which one is the best?

in terms of privacy?
in terms of security?
in term of usage?


for me security is the most important, by which if a hacker get hold of the data, its just 0's and 1's. they would need super computers from 21XX to get the info.

the amount of data is not that important. cause it will be documents and not music and video which i upload. maybe images of documents.

You are asking us whether guy A, B, or C should hold your stash of porno mags. In all cases, if a guy robs any of them, you still probably could lose it. The only real difference is: if you make your own local cloud server, normally a guy either has to be within your wifi range, or know some real voodoo magic.

You could maybe encrypt your amazing data yourself if you fear hackers. IIRC Veracrypt sounded like they were getting somewhere and afterwards you can upload it to one of the cloud servers.

Usage. How do you want to use such things? Personally I have no issue with setting up a FTP client, others need something tightly, perhaps even transparently, wound into explorer before it even gets considered and others still will want the option to access it from anywhere and on any device.

What you have not asked is what kind of "data policy do they have". You might want this as many will not have backup servers they will stand behind. It will probably have a basic setup but it is not going to be the kind of thing that can survive their data centre falling over*.

*related to loss is the issue of downtime. If I set one up for a business I would hope it would be in driving distance from here -- a case full of hard drives does have a fairly impressive amount of bandwidth after all.

Microsoft OneDrive. It even says so in their EULA.

If you are super concerned about security and privacy, though, then there is no other solution than backing up your files yourself. Trusting another entity with your information is always going to come with some sort of compromise.

It's same thing with everything with internet really, only put things there what you know you can show to someone, like my DropBox is basically everything in Public folder and then bunch of shared folders. That's why I personally hate when EVERY - SINGLE - ONE of my android apps are asking permission to auto-upload my images to their service - and this includes Google+ and Facebook! If I accidently took naughty image then it would be in every single service there is, even if it weren't public #fappening

Clouds are great but for personal stuff just keep it local and offline.

OneDrive is above even Dropbox which is the primary datacenter for SAMSUNG.

If you're an art major though, I'd recommend using storage provided by Adobe or an Anti-virus suite from a software bundle. Especially if you have to use "alternative licensing methods" for localization purposes like I have had to (and many others of us on the forum have been doing, on-going).

Use and participate in Wikipedia to find out what licensing/regional restrictions you can bypass or fair trade for.

I've recently have done my fair share of research on this matter since I wanted to have a backup of some very rare warez, which I conveniently could then share with close personal friends.
In my quest I've stumbled upon a few free Cloud services;

- Ozibox. 100 GB free, driven by the community. Basically Dropbox but way, WAY bigger and way WAY buggier. Holy shit this client is so bad, it fails to upload/sync. Very small business that honestly feels like the entire crew is dead and just a matter of time before the service dies too. 100 GB is superb but it's just unprofessional and not recommended

- SurDoc. Again 100 GB free, but only for 1 year. After that you gotta pay up. This is way better and actually works, although I find their folder structure kind of annoying. Nothing special in the security aspect, although you can just password your 7z's and you're safe.

- MEGA. 50 GB free, and this is the 'successor' of MegaUpload. THIS service is very well made and professional, and it really encrypts your data in the Cloud. It feels much more secure really, especially if you put a complex password on your .7z's too. This is the one I would recommend, 50 GB is not half bad, easy to share, big company support.
As secure as it gets online

One word: MEGA. They have the most user friendly, end-to-end, on the fly crypto but if you really want your files to be secure encrypt them again with a program similar to Tryecrypt. The EFF has a bunch of guides to protect your data here

it's funny how restricted passwords make them somewhat less secured...

cuz it makes people stop wasting time bruteforce lets say 5 characters (and usually you are offered a maximum), so bruteforce starts at 6characters and up
then, the obligatory 1 number and 1 uppercase letter turning "password" into "Password1" or "PassWord1" or even "PaSsWoRd1" which is not really hard to guess...but in the contrary the bruteforce program will have a higher library to try until it gets to that last one...
also, when people see this requirements, they will make one to fit them, and usually is a bad choise, like a word filled with numbers or special chars..., because they will don't want to forget it, so they must make it easy to remember (and guessing)...

but bruteforce is just one of the processes, there are other ways, specially when the clound services don't save the data encrypted in the first place and the password is just a key to open a door and if you break the walls or go under the floor you see "naked data"

and damn you random websites i must register with a so restricted password just because 1 download or 1 post... which i use it once and then next time i create a new account because i forgot how the hell i typed "P@55VV0RD"

A friend told me he uses Boxcryptor to encrypt his cloud files.
It created a virtual AES-256 encrypted drive on your computer side, and you synch that drive with compatible cloud services.

I didn't test it, but it might be what you are looking for. (if you are still looking since last month)
My friend said he is using an old standalone version (filename BoxCryptor_Unlimited_1.5.411.151), which doesn't require an account to validate licenses.
