I am in a same boat as some of the posters in this thread. My ISP provided me a locked down router, and they change the password and Username on it. I am using another router as an access points for wireless connectivity as a "slave" router. I am able to input which url I want blocked in the slave router, but some of the blocked url is still getting through. I found this out by the Wii U and it had an X over the system update in the download manager. The X stayed for about an hour or two playing offline in MK8 and after a little while playing online, I decided to check the download manager, and to my surprise it was almost completed on downloading the said update and the X is no longer there. I tried pinging the 5 url and out of the 5, three of them was replying back. Perhaps my setup is not good enough? My current ISP is the only ISP where I live. I never disabled filtering in any way. I am guessing that the ISP provided router will have to have the block url instead of the slave one.

Buy your own router and hook it up behind your ISP's router. Just because they give you a router, doesn't mean you have to use it.

And blocking IP's isn't as good, because the IP addresses could change.

Well that's a shame.. Maybe I could contact my internet supplier and ask them to block these for me.
Is there any other way around it?

My current router supports my cable tv and line phone as well, so swapping it for another isn't such a good option.

Aside from trusting the IPs to not change or cause side effects, and changing your equipment setup, the only other option is to set up a proxy server.

Something weird happened with my wii u today. So for the past couple of days it has been trying to download the 5.1 update and has failed because I blocked the updates. However today I go to make sure it's still not downloaded and I see nothing in the download manager, so I go to check what version I'm on. To my shock I see that I'm on 5.1. I have no idea how this happened. These are the url's that I have blocked by my router (I block urls because it doesn't support blocking ip addresses.)
  • nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
  • nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
I deleted my internet connection to prevent this from screwing me. What's weird is that these also block updates for my 3ds's and they did for the wii u. I have no idea how the update was downloaded. Any suggestions?

That nearly happened to me, except I stopped it before the update completed download. I supposed the "OK" button was not on the update? I don't remember correctly, but I thought the previous update did have "OK" button that you tap on to confirm with the install, but no way to deny it. Out of curiosity, does your setup have 2 routers, a router behind a router? If so, this could be the problem, as you may already read my previous post.
I setup my own proxy server and it seems to be blocking out the update so far, but I dunno how long this will work. However I used wildcard in the url for the proxy server to deny incoming and outgoing access. Also allows me to keep an eye on the connection activity and MK8 seems not to use much bandwidth. After about 1½ hours of playing MK8 online, bandwidth usage was only 241KB. Perhaps the server did not record all the activities going on but I thought this was on the low side.

I have standby mode on so it installed when it was off. Yeah I have one router connected to another, but I have my wii u connected to the main router so that's not the problem. What's even weirder is that I checked the log for blocked websites on my router and nothing showed up even though I saw the update failing to download several times.

Wow that is weird, supposed that somehow Nintendo changed or used alternate url just to get around the block? Also I forgot the standby mode that's in the 5.0 firmware, I do not have it on as to me that feature is useless and don't use the Wii U every single day. Most often times the Wii U is off for days on ends. Just curious if your router supports wildcard? This might salve that dilemma. I read somewhere on this forum that the exploit is not patched in 5.1 so perhaps you're safe? We will see, I guess.

I'm not risking it. I deleted my connection. I just wanted to post it to see if anyone had a solution and to worn people that an update is still possible with the urls blocked.

I do not blame you, and deleting your connection is the safest bet for preventing an update. Only problem is that you cannot play online like MK8. I really don't have any solution, and yeah, my proxy server did have a log of a bunch of url used when connecting online to MK8 server and some of the url were akamai.net or something like that. It's scary to think that the big 5 url is not enough.

Yeah it really sucks that I can't play mk8 online anymore. But it's not worth risking another update so I will stay offline from now on. I still don't understand how it downloaded in the first place. It kept failing to download for days and then suddenly it's downloaded and installed.

The update situation is very puzzling. I imagine that it should be okay to play MK8 online now since you updated, and when you see that downloading update in the download manager or an X again, then delete connection and stay offline. Sometimes people on here post about the upcoming updates too so that could be your cue to cut the cord per se.
Just a suggestion.

Yeah I guess I could.. I just don't really want to risk it and be screwed out of homebrew.

I updated to 5.1 this morning with no regrets. I would like homebrew on my Wii-u eventually (custom tracks on MK8 sounds very exciting!) however I'm not willing to disable internet on my Wii-u in order to preserve a 4.X firmware, and I'm not very confident that a block list will be effective for long. I mean how easy is it for Nintendo to push an update from a new IP address?
Personally I'll bet there will be usable exploits for 5.x+ systems. If not, oh well, it's not like having an offline Wii-u in the meantime is appealing.
Sure, it's possible in the distant future that there could be an emulated current firmware, that allows online play, running on top of an exploited 4.X firmware (similar to 3DS emunand). If that happens you people who managed to stay on 4.x will be rewarded for your efforts, but you'll be waiting offline for a long time before that comes.
Also another consideration is if 4.x firmware remains the only exploited firmware for the long term, do you think any homebrew developers will work on a system that exists on only a handful of offline Wii-Us? I think developers will show interest only if exploits are persisting or easily discovered/ported onto new firmwares.

This is just my opinion on the matter. It's my personal justification to simply update my F/W with no regrets. Each individual needs to make these decisions for themselves.

Hey guys! I'm trying to block all the IP's on my router but I'm having a lot of trouble! I think I am at the right place on my router's hub, I added all the IP's and hosts listed here but when I go to my Wii U, it starts updating! I'm on 5.0 and I wanna take care of this before Nintendo releases some sort of patch. There is an option called "Protocol" on the screenshot I took of my router's hub and I was wondering if that plays an important role in all of this! (Even though it is in Portuguese, I think you guys can understand)

Any help would be truly appreciated! I tried to add the screenshot here, hope it worked!

Sorry for double posting, but what URLs should I block?
I cannot block IP addresses, and I have a limit of 40 characters per URL.
