Scary Games and Scary Movies are always a fun experience for some people. There's something about getting your adrenaline pumping and your mind racing while you immerse yourself in a world more terrifying then The one you live in.

So I'm asking today what some of your favorite horror games or franchises are. And hell even Reccomend some to the horror enthusiasts around here.

Recently I played an Indie horror title named "Among the sleep." In this game you retake the first person view of a 2 year old child that wakes up in the middle of the night to seek comfort during a dark and scary storm. What awaits you, is for you to find out.

I must say, taking the view of a child and roaming around an average house is something that can make you really look over your shoulder while you're playing, wondering of your house is also making the same creepy noises and having the shadows dance along the walls wondering they're real things or not. Fantastic game.

Another personal favorite franchise of mine is the Resident Evil Series. Albeit it's horror has gone from being horrifying and survival, to just horrific gameplay and story, it still shares a bond in my heart as a game that made me wanna wet my pants as a child. Dogs bursting through windows man...

I'm also absolutely pumped for The Evil Within later this year. Horror games are always fun, when they're done right.

So what's your opinion temp? What scary games are favorites of yours?

Silent Hill 2 is my favourite! Silent Hill 4 has grown on me, and I like all the hidden meanings in the game.
Silent Hill 1.. it's just classic... and Silent Hill 3 is a great continuation from the first game.

Other horror games haven't really stuck with me.

Silent Hill games, the Cry of Fear mod/standalone, and Dead Space 1 (the rest of the Dead Space games were too focused on action than horror) stand out to me personally. Otherwise, there aren't a whole lot of good horror games IMO. All the recent indie stuff have been more about jump scares and stupid shit like that than anything, and the others are similar to Amnesia the Dark Descent; "ambient" horror (read: scary thumps omg doors closing so spooky) with a monster that chases you sometimes while you do silly puzzles.

Definitely the Silent Hill series (except Silent Hill 1 which I never played) and the Dead Space series as well, which I'm playing through right now...I'm currently in the middle of playing Dead Space 2 (scary as hell for me)...I guess it'll be interesting once I get to Dead Space 3, seeing how people are saying it's more action-oriented than horror...

As for The Evil Within...I was never a fan of the Resident Evil series, so I guess I'm going to wait and see what people say about the game once it comes out.

I've only played RE:Revelations. It's pretty scary on highest difficulty, considering how slow you move. Also jump scares. And Rachel.

ZombiU: that game scares the hell out of me.

Fatal frame: solid concept, genuinely scary and interesting atmosphere. Though that may be because I rarely see an Oriental game played out like this.

Silent hill 2: a classic for good reasons.

Bioshock (the original one): since it's a FPS, it's not "really" a horror game, but while it doesn't depend on jump scares, the atmosphere and setting are extremely good. As well as the story, for what that's concerned. Bioshock 2 just did exactly the same, and infinite took it in a whole different direction. Not a bad direction, but certainly away from the horror setting.

If plot itself is enough, I would certainly nominate Spec ops: the line as well. Not for the gameplay (which is a pretty typical modern warfare shooter), but for what it represents.

a bit old school but the 7th guest and the 11th hour
then doom (original), while not horror focused I think that gave many kids nightmares in the 90's
then the old classic silent hill 2, to play this game properly close your shades/blinds and make the room completely dark, adjust the color setting on the tv to black and white and set brightness down to lowest setting, and crank that sound up (bonus points if you have a good sound system)

Wait wut. Don't mean to offend, but how could you possibly find this game scary at all? While I've only watched one of my friends play the game for a couple hours, I didn't notice any kind of "horror" aspect in the game at all besides the whole "arg zombies gonna eat you oh no" cliche crap. From what I saw, it's absolute basic survival/fetch quests and...that's it. Maybe I haven't watched enough to get to the "scary" parts?

I can get that. The scary part is in the immersion itself. Since it's actually a horror SURVIVAL game, you need to stay on your toes. More than one zombie at a time is hard in and of itself, so there's always a threat. The fact that you have this radar-device that shows you where they are makes things worse, because it gets thrown off a lot (they're on different heights...there's rats...it doesn't work through thick walls...and so on). The fact that there were zombies wasn't the scary part. The scary part was that (somewhat permanent) death was lingering at every corner.

I loved Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on the Gamecube. I found the characters to mostly be underpowered leaving me feeling vulnerable to the monsters. It reminds me a bit of early Resident Evil with the third person view from a somewhat distant camera (not Over The Shoulder) that was not quite fixed, but conjured up that feel. It did away with the tank controls of RE, though, allowing you to move directly in the direction you move the stick. I found the H.P. Lovecraft inspired story and mythology to be really interesting, and I haven't even touched on the Sanity Effects that would start to play mean tricks on you as your character's sanity levels dropped.

I've only played one game in the Fatal Frame series (Fatal Frame IV), and I don't think I've played a game that filled me with so much terror as that one. The atmosphere was certainly creepy, the ghosts were scary and I never knew when to expect them to come out to play, so I was always on the edge of my seat. The game was so tense that I could only handle playing it in about one hour increments (fortunately, that's about how long a chapter lasted) before I was worn out from the tension I felt. Oh, and when I came into contact with that super-ghost that had its face "bloom", I was in a panic as it was invincible and it would chase you through walls as you attempt to get away. Fuck that ghost.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent was pretty good, but I think the game lasted too long as the limit in the kind of monsters you come across made them start to become too familiar as the game dragged on and I stopped feeling terror when they were in the area. They'd lose that element of "fear of the unknown", and the encounters would start to feel too similar, but I still found it worth playing overall.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was one I rather enjoyed. I haven't played any other games of the series (I really can't stand tank controls, and I read downpour wasn't very good), and my understanding is that this one is a bit of a blacksheep in being a bit different than the others of the series. It goes down the path of Psychological Thriller, which I really enjoyed seeing the story unfold as the character is searching for his daughter in a blizzard after a car accident. Suffering a head trauma in the accident, odd things start happening to him, such as characters disappearing with another one showing up and acting like they'd been there with him the whole time. The game also employs a dynamic psychological profile to try to customize the game to the things you do or perhaps just things you focus on. Maybe the characters will be a little different, the path you have to take changes, or the environment will differ depending on how you play the game. My main complaint with the game, though, is that there's a pretty clear distinction from when you're safe and when you're in danger. The "Other World" can be a bit predictable. Overall, a great experience, though.

Silent Hill. Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill 3. Silent Hill 4. Silent Hill: Origins. Silent Hill: Downpour. Silent Hill: Homecoming. Nanashi no Game. Nanashi no Game: Me. Slender: The Arrival.

No other horror games exist. Those who think otherwise are plebs.
