Hey guys, I have been using utorrent as of late and realized that I may not be using t to its full potential in regards to security, privacy, and overall efficiency. I was wondering if anybody had some recommendations on what I should configure in the settings, external programs for extra protection (already use peerblock) etc.
note: I do not have any paid/premium features or software but I am willing to pirate any that will help, assuming it can be pirated

I recommend uninstalling uTorrent and using Vuze instead. But if you really want to use uTorrent, use the version 2.5 or under. The newer updates suck and have ads.

Look into port forwarding. Here's a good site: http://portforward.com/
I know how to port forward, but how will that help? I've only used it for hosting a minecraft server before

check your maximum upload with a tool like speedtest.net and limit utorrent upload about 25%, it really depends on which internet you use

this really helps me.. if i don't do this i can't get the max speed my internet allows...

Peerblock is pretty pointless but then again if you care about security and privacy you probably would not be using torrents, to that end if you want to feel secure without actually being secure (as far as not getting a fun letter, I believe it does have some minor malware options these days, though that is still no different to just using your hosts file) and using up a tiny amount of resources in the effort then carry on. About the only way to come close to being secure with torrents is get a suitable VPN or seedbox, both of which you tend to have to pay for.

Optimal settings.... as long as you do not try to enough connections to crash the average home router (a surprisingly low number in my experience) and you can upload and download you are good. Whether you have other fun things like the trackerless stuff and magnet links and whatever else depends upon the trackers you want to use -- most of the time they are harmless and will only trouble you if you sneak on to a torrent from a private site, get banned and subsequently get an invite to said private site. About the only ones that cause trouble are some of the encrypted headers and older trackers/clients, should you run into that then go on a case by base basis or just find a better torrent to do the same file.

Tsk, tsk, tsk...
Like I stated in another thread: It's not uTorrent [that's the problem], it's YouTorrent...
That being said, the ads in the later versions can be solved with a quick google search as they can all be turned off in the preferences. Performance-wise, I've gotten the best speeds I can possibly get with the later versions. (For reference, I'm using 3.4.1 RC) Plus with all the added features (and some "features...") such as a working label system, everything is brilliant.

I believe a better way of puting privacy and security is just not getting a letter or phonecall XD.
