Lately the PS3 controller has been causing me a lot of hand cramping, so the idea of using a 360 controller on a PS3 controller became appealing. The only way to accomplish this is via the XCM adapter. Can anyone here describe their experiences with it?

Are there any drawbacks in terms of some sort of lag. Also does the adapter itself add a lot of weight to the cord itself. Thanks.

you can use almost any USB gamepad on the PS3, I used to connect this one when going to visit to a friend with PS3 before I had my own and the mapping was precise.
the Dualshock 4 is a pretty good controller and can be used(with cable) on the PS3 without issue, the only missing features will be the Sixaxis sensor and rumble.
also there is the XCM 2.1 that also support wireless XBox 360 controllers and rumble, but is very expensive and you'll still lack Sixaxis capabilities(for obvious reasons).
the drawback of using USB gamepads and adapters is that some games don't like that and simply don't work or work poorly, I remember that it was imposible to play Trine with a USB gamepad because the controller locked up if the Dualshock 3 was doing something(press a button of move a stick) and in other games the L2/R2 buttons didn't respond because said games required analog triggers.

I assume you mean the cheap XCM adapter that bridges a wired 360 controller, and not any of the overpriced piles of shit they also sell. If so then no, they add very little weight to the cord. Though 9 times out of 10 you shouldn't have the cord suspended in mid-air (what are you, across the damn room?) considering that the wired 360 controllers have super long cords.

As for my experience with it...flawless? I've never had an issue with my adapter. It works perfectly with no input lag whatsoever.

I just finished reading some XCM Amazon reviews and noticed a lot of people complaining about short lifespans. Do you know of any quality third party ps3 controllers with an xbox 360 style configuration?

I bought mine ...4? years ago. Still works fine. There aren't any third party controllers as good as the 360 controller.
