From my understanding, only 3DS eshop games will work but not GBA/DS games since that kicks you back into DS mode. But how can I be sure if a game runs in 3DS mode or GBA/DS mode? Here are some of the games I'm interested in:
  1. Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies: 3DS mode
(Does the DLC download and work?)
  2. Cave Story (2d version): I see it listed under 3DS Downloads and DSiWare. So would the 3DS Downloads version run in 3DS mode?
  3. Shantae: this old GBC game is listed under 3DS Downloads with no DSiWare listing. 3DS mode?
  4. Shantae: Risky's Revenge: it's listed as DSiWare but the product page shows that it's available from both the Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo eShop) and Nintendo DSi (DSi Shop). No idea.

Thanks for being condescending, but that link is useless. He was aking about whether the games would run if you purchase them from the eShop.

AFAIK: All 3DSware that's built with SDK6.x or lower will work (anything released before Pokebank should be safe, any eShop exclusive games after that probably won't work and retail games also released on eShop will probably work). 7+ and DSiware doesn't. Not sure about Gameboy titles and stuff. I know Phoenix Wright works though.
If you want to know whether a non-VC game runs in DSi mode or 3DS mode, simply look at the screenshots on the eShop page. If they're at DS resolution, it runs in DSi mode, if it's widescreen, it's 3DS mode.

well some nintendo football game released recently doesn't work so i'm assuming most/all coming out from now on will be using the damn 7.x encryption :P
on the side of carts some games have been released with the 7.1 title update but so far still no cart games using the new encryption which is nice

Yeah, US eShop version is old; I guess if dumped it will work. However, I’m not sure if they compiled EU version using the latest SDK or just used some “internal old ROM” and submitted it to Nintendo. That’s why I was asking for someone’s personal experience. I don’t really want to waste money and never play the actual game.

Ah, that's why Pokémon Bank doesn't work on emuNAND? It just shows the 3DS logo on the top screen and does it forever, I have to yank the battery out.

I wanted to see what would happen if I used a Gateway copy of Pokémon with it, but even with my retail game in the slot, it wouldn't load.

Sorry I misunderstood. People ask all the time whether games are compatible, so that's why I was annoyed.

As of Gateway 2.1 all 3DS eshop games and apps run except for the GBA ambassador games, but no DSiware games run. If the original Shantae is on the virtual console it should be fine. As for Risky's Revenge, I think you're out of luck.

Not all eshop games run now, same as poke bank and the US youtube app, games are now coming out with the 7.x encryption so they don't work in emunand, I believe Nintendo pocket football club does not work, and I'm sure most/all future games released will not be emunand compatable
