I'm looking to buy a 3DS flash cart, and I was wondering which would be the best pick? Gateway, R4i Gold, or misc? What are your opinions on them, and where might I be able to order one when I go to purchase one?

Gateway:
-Compatible with the newest games like TLOZ: A Link between worlds; small bricking risk

MT-Card:
-Supports MultiROM (serveral games on one MicroSD card) but not the latest games (Bravely Default [EUR] and Luigi & Mario dream team bros are supported)

If you want multi-ROM support out-of-the-box, the MT-Card is the only one that currently supports that, but it isn't quite as compatible as Gateway 3DS.

Team Gateway have said that multi-ROM support will be added this week, and have said that they are addressing the bricking issue in the final version of their 2.0 firmware.

Perhaps a dozen reliably-confirmed bricks have occurred amongst users of Gateway's 2.0b2 firmware, whether it was on a Gateway card or one of its clones. A couple of people wound up with bricks without even doing anything that they were not instructed to do.

There are at least 150-200 Gateway owners right here on GBATemp who frequent this forum, so you realistically have less than a 10% chance of bricking. 5%, even, would be a pretty high estimate.

You might want to wait to make a purchase until after the 2.0 firmware is released, because the other clones and copies of Gateway 3DS cards will almost certainly just adopt the new firmware update and modify it to run on their cards. I'd give it a week, while checking back on these forums to see what kind of bugs or issues the new firmware has, before you decide on which flash cart to buy.

I have owned a Gateway card for about three weeks now, and have been running 2.0b2 the entire time, without a single issue, beyond freezing up while booting in Gateway Mode perhaps once out of every 10 or 15 attempts. I've booted into Gateway Mode from having my console completely powered off at least 200 times since getting my Gateway card, and still, no issues.

Also just to clarify the bricking chance with gateway only relates to b2, if you stick to b1 you still have all the game compatibility that b2 has but you can't go on eshop and if you update to 7.1 on emunand it gets a bit buggy, but if you just care about being able to play the latest games gateway is the best choice imo

Also because many people overlook this fact, your 3DS has to be on 4.5 or below in the system settings, if it's any higher none of the cards will work for you

I am looking for reliability. The bricking risk is what is turning me away from Gateway. The games I am interested in are Bravely Default and the Harvest Moon games. As long as I can play those and not have the risk of a system brick, I'll be perfectly happy. Anything to match that?

Edit: I do have 4.5.something on my 3DS, having use Luigi's Mansion to update it.

Tbh I will probably be scorned for speculating but the whole bricking came about because other card dev's where ripping off gateways firmware, none of the other cards have developed their own firmware, MT probably comes closest to developing something, but they still heavily based their firmware on gateways, and after the bricking incident occurred nobody has heared anything else from them regarding the updates they had promised, which leads me to believing they where planning to keep copying gateways code but have now changed their mind, the gateway team are the only team who actually developed all their own work and have proven they know how to do what they do without having to rely on other to copy from, and after they started booby trapping the firmware I wouldn't risk using a card that might inadvertently copy a booby trap,

IMHO you only have 2 choices MT which kinda did some work but have since disappeared, or gateway which have dirtied their own name a bit with the whole brick code fiasco, either way none of the card available are completely ethical in what they do, but you have to just put your faith into either team to prove they know what they are doing

Would MT be my safest option then? I found a seller in Signapore for 77$ with shipping and tracking. Seems like my best option right now. Cna it play the Harvest Moon games?

Edit: I found that 4CoolDay has the MT cards. Is that a good place?

It would play the harvest moon games....but I have heard mixed messages about bravely default, also if you stick to b1 on gateway your just as safe as with MT, except it play all the newer games being released

I would actually suggest you wait a few weeks and see if MT will ever release another firmware or if gateway release 2.0 final without bricking booby traps,

Hmm... maybe I will buy Gateway then. What's the full version name of the safe, non-bricking version? I don't care about multi-rom right now.

If you go to the download site copy the first link then change b2 to b1

Once again the choice is your own but if you don't care about multi rom too much gateway has better compatibility and a more promising outlook in my opinion

Thank you very much for this. I might end up asking again at a later date when my product comes in to make sure I get the non-bricking version of the firmware. Can't be too cautious. Thank you very much gamesquest1!

It sould be okay if you buy from 4coolday. I personally don't use my GW currently very much since I have a MT and I don't have to swap MicroSDs all the time. The EUR version of Bravely Default is compatible with the MT. But you should really wait until GW or MT release something.

Where do you see this? Everything I see they have only said it will be released "soon."
They said it would be released in the days following the new year, since that has already long past we can assume they meant the days following new years 2015. So we have roughly 10 months to wait.

On R4i's Download page:

Attention: Please don't use the firmware V3.0~V3.3 at the moment, which might cause a potential "blue screen" risk, we are still working on a solution for this critical issue, will fix it in the coming firmware V4.0(with mutiROM feature).

Epic making out to their customerbase that they have multiROM in the works lol... So do they now steal MT's Copy of 1.2 + MultiROM, or dream of stealing it from GW?!
OOOORRRR R4i have coded their entire own new system + emuNAND + MultiROM?

Cheeky fuckers
