3DS flash card manufacturer Gateway has been accused of allowing users' 3DS consoles to become irretrievably bricked by a secret "kill switch" it introduced in a recent update.

Report indicate that the doomsday trigger will activate if users attempt to modify a file within Gateway's illicit game launcher - something many recently attempted after a method to circumvent the 3DS' region-locking was discovered.

Once activated, the code will corrupt the 3DS' NAND flash memory beyond repair - leaving some who have used the device with no choice but to send their handhelds to Nintendo for repair.

Ah, media attention!

No new information, but it's interesting to see a news site pick up on this. At any rate it would serve as a good article to read if someone whats to know why everyone is up in a firestorm over Gateway now. I guess this also explains why Gateway's site was down earlier today. GBAtemp also gets a mention :)

Anyone think this article will convince Gateway to remove the bricking code?

This is probably more mainstream attention than they want drawn to themselves. Hopefully it teaches them to keep themselves more low key (IE not drop bricking code on people). And hopefully they don't simply disappear from the face of the earth if this causes a lot of subsequent media attention.

I'm sure people who work hard for this website, like Ryukouki, are feeling happy that gbatemp gets mentioned by reputable sources. Though this is actually bad for the flashcart scene to go mainstream, nintendo will be forced to pour more effort into blocking it. They don't want to let people know that there are working flashcarts out there AND some of them will even harm the system.

First thing that comes to mind is new emunand support when the next official firmware updates comes out.

What a fucking mess!

Being recognized is more on myself, and won't impact the other users. It definitely is bad though; yet, either way flash carts in general are still going to be bad and there isn't really a mainstream for this. Honestly the way things have been pouring out as of late, it might even be safer just to block the unit. :P

Hah, yeah, I call BS. 2.02b is to be avoided at all costs. IOh GW, you keep digging yourselves deeper and deeper into an abyss. I love PR stunts. Care to explain why legit users suffer, for them to assume all users used clones is a rather dick thing for them to do, is it not?

I'll take it. I'll (unlike gateway...) even handle the shipping charges.

Blah, different countries.
Meh, I accidentally bought a second one when I thought buygateway3ds was a scam, and it's sill in the original teensy envelope. I wouldn't mind getting rid of it at a loss, I have no idea how to sell it.
