The part that I don't like is that modifying your Launcher puts you into the same bag as a clonecart user.

This. Normatt file isnt copying anything from gw and even helps the scene getting further. Yet it is treated as any other clone. Modifying in ANY way and it will get bricked. Not the method to use dude.....This will also stop innovation...like the normatt free region hack......

If you don't own a flash cart, I don't know what you are doing in this thread then. Nothing here that concerns you. If you do, and you used it, even running roms for games you own, you are pirating, since for nintendo, and pretty much every other company, the simple fact of USING illegitimate hardware and/or software is considered piracy (even though, in practical terms, in pretty much every country, that doesn't count as piracy, so you can not be charged for OWNING and/or USING them, but still, you are a pirate in the eyes of many people). If you only purchased a flashcart to say you own one, congratulations, idk what to say to such action.

btw, I purchase games too, lots of them. But I'm still a pirate, and I love it.
Using a flashcart to run homebrew and/or avoid region lock may not be within the Terms of Use, but it's certainly not piracy.

what did you say?

No it's not that. Geez. You should probably learn how to read properly and thoroughly. Normatt's modified launcher won't do any bricking if the bricking code is not there in the first place. Claims so far have stated that there is indeed a code in the latest gw firmware that cause bricking (The code is not there in previous firmwares if I'm not mistaken).

Because before this thread was started..

1. i know how easy Gateway is to install-and-use
2. i seen it in action and loved its features
3. i was going to buy a nintendo 3ds this month so i hoped this was false rumour..
and my conclusion is.. using gateway's launcher + install files is safe

All I ever wanted was the ability to play any region of games on my 3DS, and all I still have is Gateway.
It's ridiculous.

You're right about that, but not for the reason you think.

Let's put it in different categories to make the situation more clear to those who defend randomly putting Bricking code in your binaries.

Imagine that you've bought a BMW for a whole lot of your hard-earned cash. You sit down in your BMW, but something's missing... so you drive to the nearest gas station and buy a small ornament, for example a nice-smelling little tree. You really like it, but it doesn't have good string to hang it with - the original one is kinda flimsy... so you add your own string and hang it on the rearview mirror - it fills your car (let me stress this one more time - your privately-owned, personal, very expensive car) with wonderful scents of the forest... AND THEN YOUR CAR EXPLODES! KA-BLAM! YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO STICK A THIRD-PARTY THREAD THROUGH THE TREE ORNAMENT, F*CK YOUR BMW! ;O;

This is what happened. In this story, your 3DS'es are the BMW's, the tree ornament is the flashcart and the Launcher is the thread. :)

Excellent analogy, but I have one caveat. The Gas station owner knows the wrong strings might cause your car to explode, but he literally doesn't understand why and he continues to sell those strings to people. The gas station owner is the cloner, and he is a part of the problem too right?

I believe the term "Piracy" is not the definition of "Copying games and sharing them, or using shared copied games". Every time you're doing something outside the terms of use, you are committing something you are not supposed to, therefore, you're out of their terms, out of their laws. Committing piracy :)

He indeed is a part of the problem, but he's nonethewiser because he's a gas station owner, not a string manufacturer. :tpi: He literally just gets counterfeit strings and sells them at his counter. ;) I get your point though, t'is all about the money.

EDIT: Also, holy f*cking s*it, Crass!? Long time, no see? Where the hell have YOU been? :O

So, bricking consoles because they can't handle any sort of competition? That's going way too far, and I for one will NEVER purchase a product from the GW asshats who thought this was a good idea; whether this was just targeted at clones or not just not justify bricking a console, not everyone is in an area in which they can get a hold of a legit Gateway.

It seems that using any sort of modified software for the official device could trigger a brick of the console as well, which is them basically saying you are NOT allowed to do what you want with the hardware that you purchased; so, tell me what makes them better than any other company out there trying to lock down their hardware?

People should flat out boycott Gateway products for now on, unless they want to inevitably be screwed and be without a console because someone may do something with their official GW that the GW Team doesn't want being done. Good job at pissing off a lot of people GWNubs.

Considering what they did with the Wii U (making the GamePad's region locked on top of your typical region locking), I doubt that's going to happen. Would be nice if they did.

No, you can buy a new 3DS for that region to play those games. That's the legal thing to do.

As of this moment, any region-bypassing and "backups-playing" is illegal, making it a black market. If you brick your console, then too bad. It's the risk associated with illegal things.

Hell, I'm not even sure Nintendo will fix people's console now that this issue is blown out of proportion, and they know what's going on. You're causing your own demise, clone users.

All I ever wanted was the ability to play any region of games on my 3DS, and all I still have is Gateway.

I think you should just wait til r4i releases their own firmware.
"Good luck with that".
