I mean everyone is connecting only 4 pins (SPI mode: only Dat0, slower).

I asked if someone tried connecting 7 pins (4bits mode: dat0 dat1 dat2 and dat3, for faster transfer) or if it wouldn't work because only SPI mode work without a license?

It depends on the reader, in which mode the data are transfered. All readers, i use seem to run in SDIO mode. Can r/w with 5 MB/s.

I never tried 4 bit mode, because 1 bit mode is fast enough.

Alright I tried this today and it didn't work. My 3DS XL is still ok though :)

I soldered the dat0, cmd, clk and gnd as shown in the photos on the first page of the thread. I connected the butchered micro SD adapter to my USB SD reader and booted my 3DS to a blue screen. My computer recognised a new device was plugged in, but disk imager wouldn't pick it up.

At the moment I think my options are to try it on a different computer or try a different SD reader.

I have chronicled my issues here ad nauseum. I always get excited when I see someone post in this thread hoping it's an answer to my prayers.

I recommend taking some pics and posting your blue screen error. Maybe someone can help you. I think I am literally the only one that couldn't be helped (thus far) lol.

That's kinda strange. Maybe you should make a list of what you think made it not working. Put everything that crosses your mind into it, no matter how crazy it is.
Then read it and try to experiment with every one of them.

I have literally tried this on a total of five machines. Three different sets of wires. Five different SD card. Three different readers (two of which I tried soldering directly to). Three different computers spanning 4 different OS.

The only constant here was that ALL of the machines sold with 6.x+ firmware straight out of the box. My one and only theory, at this point, is that newer machines somehow block dumping/flashing. I went ahead and found a 4.x firmware unit, however I haven't done anything with it yet. I plan to give it a go and test my luck.

My guess it that you are doing something fundamentally wrong like not turning on the 3DS before connecting to the computer ^^
Something thats so simple you forgot about it and everyone trying to help just assumes you already did right.

I had the best results with OSX, as it doesn't get confused when you remove usb devices repeatedly, and the wires directly soldered to an sd card reader that only supports one format.

So here is how it goes....

First I will boot the DS, not plugged into anything. This is just to make sure I do NOT get a blue screen when booting "normally". From there I plug the card into the adapter (note that when I tried soldering to the adapter these two steps were skipped for obvious reasons). I get a blue screen. I then plug the adapter into the USB port on one of my three computers. Each computer recognizes that something has been plugged in (I get the USB sound), however it doesn't show that there is a readable/writable drive there. I did confirm that the readers are working because as soon as I plug in a "real" SD/ micro SD card it lets me read and write to that.

When you solder the wires directly onto the reader do you insert an empty microsd adapter into the card reader ?
How do you check if the OS recognizes a drive ? Do you check under Disk Utility (OSX) / Disk Management (Windows) or just if it pops up in the explorer / finder ?

Im assuming you get valid error codes on the 3DS and one of the faulty wiring ones

I do not put a sd card in with the wires soldered to the reader directly(if you go back a couple of pages you can actually see how I have things set). I have tried disk utility, I tried an application who;s name escapes me for Windows (I am currently booted into OSX or else I could tell you right away) that scans for additional drives at the click of a button.

I am getting valid errors (again, they are all chronicled - most from page 30-37-ish of this thread should you care to take a peek).

EDIT: By the way, what utility do you use in OSX to read/dump/flash your NAND? I was only using OSX as another way to see if I could read the card, but I sort of assumed I was stuck using windows should I finally get this thing working.

I went ahead and modded the "old" 3DS XL. It was packaged (and still had) firmware 4.2.0-9U. STILL NOT WORKING. (computers not recognizing the card) :nayps3:

Here is my error code on this unit...
00F800F
DFDFFFFF FFFFFFFF
00000200 0000000

GOOOOOOOOODDDDD LOOOOORRRRDDDDD
TELL ME HOW THIS MAKES SENSE!!!!!! (ok enough caps)

I am able to get blue screen when I plug into any of the three external SD readers that I have. When I unplug from there (3ds and blue screen still on) and plug into my built in reader, Windows sees the device. WHY?

Anyway... dumping NAND now... but seriously that was a freaking PITA. The next fun thing? I can't find the stupid little read/write tabby for my card. My plan was to just bridge the pins on the connecter... yeah not so much when the only working one is built into my iMac....

But at least... progress... LOL

If you can hear the 'usb device added sound' in WINDOWS, Do you see a new drive in start/menu/control panel/administrative tools/Computer Managment/Storage/Disk Managment ?

Maybe you have some win tweaks, and it doesn't get drive letter automagically.

Have a look at my previous (edited) post.

To answer your question, yes I do hear the sound every time. Also, I shouldn't have any tweaks. This is a fresh install of windows 8.1. Just about the only thing I have installed is Final Fantasy XIV, Firefox, Chrome, and... that's it lol.

My guess is that all the external readers work as well :)

Alrighty!

So, updates to 7.0.1 worked fine!
Downgrade..... SUCCESS!!!

Last small problem... I go on the eShop and all games say "currently not available". When I go on with any other 3DS I am able to see purchasable/downloadable items. What gives?

EDIT: LOL I am just dumb... I didn't have things set to US...

Guys,

Is there an alternate point for CLK on 3DS XL ?
I managed to rip off the pad. No idea how that happened, my soldering skills are usually really good. I tried to scrape a bit of the trace off, but its to small to even connect a 30 AWG wire to it.

Can anyone please help, I'm desperate to dump my NAND before i install gateway 3ds.

Can't you dump it with software instead ?

Well I can but i'd need to install Gateway 3D. I was hoping to get a nice clean NAND image.

The reason why all this happened was: i was checking my solder points, and nudged the CLK cable slightly. The pad came loose with it.
Im not sure maybe that's why the NAND didn't dump in the first place but ...
When connecting the SDcard to a SDcard reader the 3dsxl would boot into blue screen.
When i'd connect the card reader to my Windows 7 VM i would get a drive letter come up. But I wouldn't get the "format drive" message. Instead I'd get a no media found. Win32DiskImage wouldn't detect the drive letter (F:) even though it was there :/

Also i prepared a nice pinout on the corner of the machine i was hoping to use it for flashing :/

Can anyone tell me if they use a multimeter on the pinouts, should there be a short between CMD and DAT0 and GND ?
