Hey, I haven't found an answer, figured I'd check here. I have the cable, but the end was cut. This was part of a multi cable from gamestop that does PS2, Wii, N64, Gamecube and I think original Xbox. I cut the rest off since I only was using it for PS2.

Then I got this N64. I only have the ugly coaxial cable, which IMHO has the worst quality audio. These wires are coming out, its brown, black, white, red, yellow, and green. I tried connecting yellow, red and white to a regular RCA cable, but I got no output.

Its obvious that black is ground but I've never seen ground in video cables. I dont even see how its possible. I know I could just buy some cables, but I have all these parts already, I'd like to get this working.

Any ideas would be great, any help appreciated as always!

Every rca cable has a ground, it's the shielding. Those would all need to be connected together. Red and white ought to be audio, yellow ought to be video.

No idea about the other ones.

What concerns me more is why you would have cut them off in the first place.

You really want to avoid multi console cable. They offer worse image quality than individual cable.

Anyway to figure out which wire is what get a multimeter and do a continuity test.

how would continuity help? i dismantled the plastic housing to determine what pins these wires come from

based on http://pinouts.ru/Game/n64video_pinout.shtml

i found that : White = 1, Red = 2, Yellow = 3, Black = 5, Brown = 6, green is both 7 and 8 its bridged. any insight on how that corresponds to yellow, white and red?

edit: and the remaining pins are non-existant.

You may have the pins backwards. You should have wires going to 9, 11, and 12. 9 would be composite video and 11 and 12 stereo sound.
Green is most likely ground (pins 5 and 6)

connecting the Yellow RCA -> Green w ground (black and brown) attached to the cable shield, i get a fuzzy picture.

using this as my guide, i dont see how i can have it backwards but your logic makes sense.

They've never given me any issues with regard to image quality, provided you don't do something silly like try to have more than one system connected at a time. Even with the power off, that will definitely cause quality to drop.

Which defeats the point of multi console cable to begin with. If you have to connect and disconnect each time to swap console, might as well go for individual cable.

Wtf? Who the hell cuts parts off of a multi cable? I don't know any instance where that's a "good idea". If I were you I'd get my head screwed on straight then buy a normal Nintendo A/V composite cable which can be used for Snes, N64 and Gamecube.

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling

LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways

@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
before that there was one to generate a fully modeled scene from a 2D image
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but most recently, there was one that actually generates a working unity scene with terrain and textures already set up that you can import right into unity, that's a huge time saver right there

and using LLMs to generate NPC dialogue and even dynamically generated quests is something i'm sure is already happening
