Okay so way back when in June (June 12th to be specific) I had my father preorder the Xbox One Day One Edition for me because at the time I didn't have the money (little did I know you could preorder on Amazon without paying up front) so now i'm left with a circumstantial dilemma. Please before you go and judge this isn't me being a hardcore nerd, I swear I have a mental condition where when I realize something I could have gained surpasses me because of my own actions I linger on it. But I digress. A few months after that I enrolled in my fall classes for college and eventually received my student refund. When I acquired it I repeatedly asked my father if he was sure we could buy it the month of release. He assured me he could multiple times but as insurance I bought the Pokemon Y Limited Edition 3DS XL as an investment and gave it to my father to hold on to, I spent the rest on my books, food, etc. Now, presently as of yesterday he can't afford it. Our heating decided to commit suicide so we had to purchase and replace parts amongst other things (We moved into a larger duplex than we lived in prior in the same house, long story). So now I have literally nine days to come up with the remainder. I need ideas for this and anything will help, I have a decent gaming collection but it took a while to build it up to what it is and I really don't want to revert to selling what I have (If anyone would even buy what I have) but if it's all I can do then it's all I can do. Please help a fellow gamer in need.

First of all, that "mental condition" is called a low self-esteem. The same thing happens to me and embarassing situations, but that's both a low self-esteem and Social Anxiety Disorder. But I digress.

Sell the 3DSXL, sell books you don't need (I have a ton of books I bought for college that I wish I sold immediately after I was done but can't now because they're outdated), sell games you can't ever see yourself desperately wanting to play again, ask people if you could do some favors for monies, or have a garage sale.

Or, my best suggestion, don't get it at all. You yourself said you have a decent gaming collection. Find some fun in that until you get enough money. You may kick yourself now for not getting it day 1, but you'll kick yourself anyway for allowing yourself to come to this predicament in the first place.

Oh, shut up! I'm not even counting on touching a PlayStation 4 or an XBox One in the next two to three years, let alone own one. This is really first-world problems. No pun intended, but "Winter is coming", heating is more important than a console.

That's great. My university refunds f*ck-all, what am I supposed to say? :tpi:

Wait it out. You're not missing a whole lot anyways. Your "pre-ordered" XBox One isn't going to be any different from an XBox One that you'd buy in a couple of months. You can't afford it due to a stroke of bad luck, tough, sell some swag if you can to make up for the difference and if you can't do that, wait.

I hope to all that is holy you were using the term "swag" in it's actual context and not that atrocious teenie-bopper rapper bulls**t term.

AND IT WON'T BE THE SAME.

I did indeed use it in its actual context.

Also who cares about the paint job on the controller? The console will be functionally the same.

I'm not buying an Xbox one.... ever....
Instead I'm building steam boxes out of random junk computer parts (I'm not sure how that would work actually) and then I'll be rich! (or that one either) Mwahahahaha!

I agree with Pedeadstrian though. Its a bit early to get an Xbox one.
Also use you could build a new budget gaming computer for much cheaper and wait for more money to upgrade.
Heck you could use that computer to make money with by well, making stuff.
Steam sells the exact same games for way way cheaper during sales and online is free, plus you can host your own server for most games, and mod games for more fun, and well Linux and anything you want.
Plus if you make money off it it'll pay for the new parts.

They hook up to TVs now as well.
You can learn how to build them online, you clearly have access to the internet.

Really game consoles are just locked computers with custom fitted off the shelf and old in a month parts these days.
Oh and then theres the Steam OS too... which is also free.

I really don't get the appeal of consoles anymore, they just aren't the same now and don't offer anything I can't get for.... well... free or dead cheap anywhere else with a little bit of searching.

Nintendo gets a free pass though they still try to innovate in weird ways and I'm kind of a sucker for that.

But ya, save your money, be patient... build a money making budget gaming machine for half the price.

Well my suggestion anyway, or just don't get an Xbox One and wait for the price to drop next year.... yes I'm predicting an early price drop, just watch. xD

I am and will always be a true blue Nintendo fan boy, I have multiple of their consoles i've kept over the years and as soon as I could I bought the Wii U and 3DS. I just can't become a PC Gamer. That's actually what my father is and he has a pretty high end gaming PC that looks fantastic. It's just something I can't adjust to. I was born and raised a console gamer off Nintendo. I've found when i've tried getting into PC gaming I just end up stuck on emulators. The only two PC games i've dabbled in are TF2, Warframe, and a couple others I can't even remember.

Thanks for the push to wait though guys, I just literally lost sleep over it because I found out yesterday, and like I said, it's not because it's a console, it's just the circumstance.

Don't get me wrong, I'm feelin' ya - I'd be pretty pissed off too... but on the other hand, you have to consider the fact that freezing your butt off during the winter wouldn't be a pleasant prospect. ;)

I agree, the sad part of the story is this morning we ran out of oil in the heater at like 5 AM. YEAH BEIN A HOME OWNERRRR

Ouch...I'm sorry to say it, Sage Gaara, but you're addicted to video game releases. And no, I'm not joking in any way. I wish I was, though... :(

I've wondered about this phenomenon before. Midnight releases, early unboxing videos, first previews and launch day titles...there's an enormous amount of money spent on creating (and maintaining) a hype. You're being pushed to like any of the games. But why? I bet you've got plenty of unfinished or unplayed games right now (pokémon Y, for example). Why don't you want those anymore?
It's because the hype has passed. And now a larger hype is coming. One where people will expect you to buy either an xbone or a PS4. Those very people probably already know that there will be a price cut in less than a year. Or that there will be a drought in game releases after the initial launch. Or that things won't be as good as they were hyped up to be (in fact, that's already known: the leap in graphics is hardly noticeable and the kinect is just a novel toy).

Get your heating fixed and avoid gaming news for a couple months. If you really HAVE to spend money on gaming, get a humble bundle or two. It won't stop the addiction, but at least it makes it bearable.

I've been to three midnight launches in my entire life >_>

If you look at my Backloggery most of my games i've finished <_<

I go back to every titles i've ever purchased to repeatedly push towards 100% Completion (i.e. i'm literally trying to get a complete pokedex and X and work on it almost daily) >_>

Welp, there's your problem.

If anything, it looks like that heating unit cut you a break.

There is nothing Xbone or PS4 really has to offer right out of the gate that justifies a day one purchase, IMO. I got my preorder cash back from Gamestop when I saw the launch lineup for the PS4. I love Knack. I got to play it at the Gamestop Expo here in Vegas this year, but that doesn't justify a day one PS4 purchase. Well, for me at least.

There will not be a shortage of PS4 or Xbone consoles in the future, and the library can only grow and get better over time. My advice is save the cash, get your priorities straight and make sure all the important shit is taken care of first. You're in college, yes? It's about time to get used to being an adult, and learning how to prioritize your cash. Gaming should be on the bottom of your list. I'm not trying to wag a finger and tell you how to use your money, I'm just suggesting that you learn how to prioritize your budget early, so when you get out of college and get that first real job, you're not swimming in debt, or worse, sitting in an apartment with your lights shut off because you made a bad decision with your money.

TL;DR: If you're that poor, should an Xbox One really be at the top of your list on what you should spend your money on?

You could always sell/return your special edition XL. That's $200 right there that you'd get back, 2/5 the price of the One.

Otherwise... controller shell - give that 6 months and you'll be able to get them for $8 out of every China website that sells video gaming shit. Past that,y ou're missing the "Day One" achievement if you don't preorder it. Big woop. I like achievements as much as the next guy, but only if I am actually doing something to get them.
