I'm considering purchasing and softmodding an original xbox and was wondering how good the compatibility is for burned disc playback. Bare in mind I use Taiyo Yuden discs, which are of high quality, and burn at low speeds. Also while I know FTP transfer is ideal I've really struggled with this process in the past.

Disc wise it is OK. The trouble comes in that different models have differing compatibility with different types of disc
http://home.comcast.net/~admiral_powerslave/dvdmedia.html lists the basics and http://home.comcast.net/~admiral_powerslave/dvddrives.html should help you ID the drive. Generally the later model xboxes were better but not always.

What was the problem you faced with FTP though? The xbox FTP servers from every dash, program and linux distro that matters are pretty forgiving of settings not being ideal and the xbox iso handling programs (I suggest grabbing the "xbox-HQ PC essentials" pack but from that it is really Qwix and C-Xbox tool that you want, you can get both from http://filetrip.net/oldies-downloads/xbox/iso-hacks-tools/ ) naturally conform to the settings the dashes expect.

I tried FTP transfer with a PS3 and while I forget the process I just remember struggling to get it to work. I don't suppose an original xbox can play games via an external hard drive.

You can make a USB adapter but it limited to USB1.1 speeds, is quite picky about the drives it uses and those drives are typically a gig or two at best so basically no you can not.

The xbox FTP stuff is really solid (I have not done enough of the PS3 to know but from what I have heard/seen it is slightly more fiddly than it might be for some programs) -- if you tell it the IP of your xbox and stick in the username, password and port (xbox, xbox and 21 for basically everything on the xbox) you will in within 4 seconds usually.

Just checked out a Youtube tutorial on the Xbox FTP process. Its says I need an ethernet crossover cable. How do I know whether the ethernet cable I currently have is of the crossover variety. Its what I received from my cable company by the way.

Either you watched an ancient youtube video or someone copied their info from an ancient youtube video -- crossover cables have not been needed both in general and because most network cards will automatically change it should it somehow be necessary for years and years at this point.

So any ethernet cable will work? Also the video recommended using flash xp. Is your recommendation of Quix the easiest to use FTP client? I could care less about feature listing. Just something with an easy to use interface.

I tend to use filezilla but I burned a lot of my games and my xbox came with 20 games and for the most part my xbox is an XBMC machine. I do have Qwix and C-Xbox tool installed for when I am too bone idle to extract a game from the iso and manually transfer it.

But yeah if your router/network gear is halfway modern then you can get away without a crossover cable.

Ahhh just thought of a new solution. Would I be able to copy games to the hard drive, via the original disc, once its softmodded? If thats the case I might just re-up my subscription with gamefly.

Assuming you change the hard drive (at its best you have less than 5 gigs to work with on the stock hard drive and DVD-DL were seen on the xbox) then yeah it is easy enough

Does playback via internal drive require any patches or things of that nature? Or once the game is transferred nothing else is required? Also assuming I only play games via internal and the system I am buying is in relatively good shape should I expect a long console lifespan.

I can not recall ever seeing a standalone patch and yeah rip it and go, anything that needed sorting would have been sorted by the ripping process most of the time anyway.

Most people seem to have problems with the DVD drive (lasers and the rubber band going making the drive stick) and power supply. The former is usually ignored as everybody uses FTP and hard drives and the latter... well the xbox was basically a PC anyway so you can replace/adapt them easily enough. Heat transfer could have been better and there is a tendency for a tiny bit of dust buildup but for the most part though there are no red ring/ylod a likes for the original xbox that I have seen/heard of.

Hmmm lets take a worst case scenario. I buy the console and shortly thereafter I deal with a problem with either the DVD drive or power supply. About how much would it cost to have it repaired from someone in the online community.

By the way do you think Xbox 360's are more prone to problems than originals? While the price would be a lot cheaper to get an original xbox, I would really prefer using a 360 wireless controller. Does 360 softmodding allow one to insert an original xbox disc and copy it to the hard drive.

Most would not bother to repair a DVD drive save for the little rubber cable (open it, clean it, put it back together) and maybe a laser replacement if you are especially bored.

Power supply. I am not sure what official/semi official replacements go for these days. http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/xbox-major-parts-c-64_22.html has them save for the 1.6 models down for about $20 USD. What installation will be varies wildly depending upon where you go and what they think, I tend not to offer such services outside my circles of friends (in which case feed me is the payment I seek) and I have all the relevant gear if I have issues so I am not sure what the going rates are. I would not be surprised if it is more economical to get another xbox and mod it. Also though it tends to be OK there is always the chance the power supply decided to take other things out when it went.

Reliability. Without question the original xbox is more reliable though the later 360 models mostly sorted their issues.

360 softmodding does not exist and the basic DVD mod that most do will not get you far on the original xbox front -- you get to buy chips and fiddle if you want to do anything with the original xbox (I doubt you will find many JTAG machines these days so look up the RGH mod, it will cost you xbox live mind). Likewise the orignal xbox backwards compatibility is not the best, it can get a lot done but there is also a lot missing. Wikipedia does seem to be a source for information this day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360
The hacked versions of the xbox emulator will allow for any game to be given a punt but it is not much better.

Are there any quality wireless controllers with the original xbox? I'm imagining not, since the only good wireless i've heard about from that generation is the wavebird for gamecube. But I figure it couldnt hurt to ask.

At this point I can not even recall any third party wireless controllers/adapters for the original xbox and yeah my only positive memories of wireless controllers (PC aside) back then are for wavebirds.

You will probably be hard pressed to find extensions as they tended to be cannibalised for USB adapters but you can extend the controllers a bit more than stock if you want.

Regarding that whole ethernet crossover cable thing, it's worth pointing out that even if you didn't have a modern network card that doesn't require a crossover one, if you were using a hub or router, you never would have needed a crossover cable.

As for burned disc, problem with that is Xbox really doesn't like CD-R or DVD-R (dunno about DVD+R, but I assume it doesn't like those either). If you absolutely can't get FTP and an upgraded HDD working, try CD-RW or DVD-RW discs.

With a JTAG/RGH'd 360 you can definitely copy original Xbox games to HDD and play them off of there. But I'm really not impressed with BC on 360, even with the unofficial version hackers put out to support more games after MS stopped.

I in no way endorse that controller, as I've never used one, and definitely wouldn't get one for that price, but just posted the link to show you that yes there are wireless controllers out there. (first hit when I googled wireless xbox original controller)
