I own a 3DS & I for one love playing DS,& DSi games on my 3DS the graphics look great in my own opinion. If you don't like bc then just don't use DS mode on 3DS but I for one love every last thing that DS mode on 3DS has to offer that includes DS mode flash carts, homebrew & reg DS games.

The best way to play each gen as far as I'm concerned

1) GB games -> modded frontlit GBC; explanation: DMG, GB Pocket and GB Light screen look like crap no matter how you bivert and frontlit them, the contrast is just so much worse than a GBC
2) GBC games -> again, modded frontlit GBC; explanation: on GBAs picture is smaller OR deformed, and it feels weird to me with all the black around, and on AGS-101 there is ghosting/dark trails in some instances (due to the slower backlit screen); frontlit GBC is the best solution
3) GBA games -> classic NES AGS-001 gba SP modded with AGS-101 screen and motherboard; explanation: best weight, shape, texture (dat NES texture...awesome), grip, etc. and best screen after mod; bonus: SPs have the best "haptic" vibration feedback in Wario Ware Twisted, the cartridge being so close to your hands.
4) DS games --> DSi XL or any other backlit DS (DSL, DSi), resort to playing DS games on a 3DS only if you're REALLY on a budget (can't afford a used DS) or for portability
5) 3DS games --> 3DS XL

I personally like to play my GBA games on the DS phat. Unlike the lite the carts fit right in and don't stick out. Screen is also better than the ags-001 of the SP. Would be nice if a lite's screen could be transfer to the phat but not really much of a concern.

all DS'es are backlit, including the ds fat. though it doesn't have brightness adjustment, you can turn it on or off, nothing between.

DS fat is frontlit like AGS-001 GBA SP, not backlit like AGS-101 SP, GB Micro, DSL and DSi.

frontlit screens have faster pixel response (no ghosting whatsoever) and have the good direct sunlight outdoor visibility of the olden days

backlit screens are nicer overall, less eyestrain and real vivid colors (not washed out colors)

edit: DS fat is backlit, I was wrong, time to buy one

btw this is possible. some ds fats have the v5 firmware, and they can be loaded with ds lite firmware which supports 4 brightness levels. i really wish my ds fat was one of them, as it has better ergonomics.

ds fat is not frontlit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compa...e_consoles#Nintendo_DS_and_Nintendo_3DS_lines

have a look at the "display" section on the table. though if you really know the difference between backlit and frontlit screens, watching a video of ds fat in youtube is enough to see it is backlit.

You're right.
Weird, I've always assumed it was frontlit, not sure why. Maybe the somewhat washed out colors.
Now I wanna buy one to see how GBA games look on it.

Honestly, I don't see the problem with the screen size and quality or HAVING A BONUS ANALOG STICK!
OH NOES! I DON'T LIKE DOOM 2 GBA BECAUSE THE COLOR IS NOT THE SAME AS THE FIRST THEREFOR I WON'T PROGRAM A WAD MANAGER FOR IT OH NOES!"
OH NOES! THE NES-101 MODEL HAS BARELY VISIBLE VERTICAL LINES! OH NOES DON'T PLAY IT!
OH NOES! WHEN RUNNING PC GAMES AT 640x480 ON A 1080P TV IT LOOKS BLURRY OH NOES!
OH NOES! THE 3DS HAS AN ANALOG AS WELL AS A D-PAD OH NOES

Don't you think you guys overreacting a bit?

worse than gba sp ags-101 unfortunately. it is backlit but not as bright as ags-101 or ds lite. still it has better ergonomics than ds lite, and it is perfect to play indoors.

As an owner of a DS Lite and a 3DS XL, I will say that I prefer to play DS games on my 3DS XL, for the following reasons:
*The sound quality on my DS Lite is absolute shit compared to my 3DS XL
*The colors on my DS Lite look kinda washed out and lacks contrast. Sure the 3DS XL makes it blurry and ugly if you didn't use the Start/Select trick, but at least the colors don't suck
*3DS XL is far more comfortable to hold
*my DS Lite does this weird thing where the top screen sometimes goes all white for no reason and I have to fiddle with it to get it back
*the screen on the DS is so damn tiny!

Ideally you should play DS games on a DSi/DSi XL, since from what I've read, it has better sound quality, but you get the bonus of being able to play games DS games at their original resolution without having a giant black border around them.

1. what about Shantae, Mighty Milky Way, Mighty Flip Champs, Cave Story and Dark Void Zero??
2. yes, indeed is the same resolution OF THE DS, DON'T JUST ASSUME THAT BIGGER SCREENS EQUALS GREATER RESOLUTION, the screens looks as crisp as ever.
3. the blocked flashcards is a problem of the past on DSi, I don't think they would be releasing anymore updates.
4. you are right with the slot-1 peripherals, nothing to do there, I admit I liked the idea of guitar hero on the go even when I'm not a fan of guitar hero and the rumble pak is a neat idea, but the support is very limited that makes it useless.

does a lot of things but I still don't like the fell of the buttons and the look of the screens, the GBA SP + DSi combo is better I think..

1. you do know that all the dsiware games are on eShop right? why bother with a dsi at all if you have a 3DS?, at this point, youd be better off trading yourr dsi for a 3ds at gamestop or something, and then take advantage of the awesome, and far superior eshop games

and, cave story isnt even on dsiware anymore!,its now been replaced with a full 3DS version.

2. the dsi xl is the same resolution, only bigger pixels, which make it look uglier, IMHO. it would be like playing mario on a Jumbotron of a baseball game. complete overkill.

3. supercard is sh**. the bottom of the barrel as fashcarts go. it has been since the GBA scene. and since 1.4.5 all the GOOD flashcarts (acekard and cyclo) dont work. i think Acekard was 1.4.4., and Cyclo only works with 1.4.1., but they run beautifully on a lite.

4. as stated before, the slot-2 extra ram pack is used in many homebrew, it makes snes games playable, as well as being able to play GBA 100% perfecly, at perfect speed and sound, on real hardware.

the "clicky" buttons will actually wear out faster and are impossible to replace. with a DS Lite, its contact points, so you just swap the dpad rubbers, and its like new.

*sound on a 3ds xl is wayyy to low. you can hardly hear anything. but at least the ds lite sound can be remedied by a speaker attachment, or just using headphons.

*the select trick is almost the same size as a lite anyway, and no firmware updats.

*buy a grip. third party accessories for the win!, every handheld after the origional grey brick and gamegear are awkward and uncomfortable. they all need a grip. the XL is still too Thin to hold, and the dpad placement makes it even worse.

technically, the Lite is easier to hold than a GB Micro. and a gbmicro is easier to hold than a pokemon mini.

*your lite is broken. need to take better care of your handhelds.

*again, same resolution as select trick.

this makes the most sense to me. except i would pass on a frontlight for GBC as the colors always look washed out ona frontlight, and instead say play GBC games under a lamp, or outdoors. and use a Super Gameboy indoors.

everything else is legit. the 3ds XL is definatly superiour to first 3ds, even though the poor sound quality on 3ds XL irks me.

there is really NO advantage to using it over the D-pad. and actually its even WORSE, Super Mario 64 is impossible with the slider pad, (i could not get the chain chomp off the leash after hours of trying), and even if you wanted to use the D-Pad they moved it down so far its now uncomfortable to access.

wat? The Circle Pad makes Mario 64 DS feel so much smoother and more precise, flinging Bowser is the easiest thing ever. In fact, the controls in Mario 64 DS feel almost identical to Super Mario 3D Land (As 3D Land often limits the amount of moveable directions to 8, just like SM64DS). And the Circle Pad can be a better alternative to the D-Pad in a number of DS games. Example; Mario Kart DS, you can actually turn without cramping your hands, and snaking is easy enough for a 5 year old to do.

Just sayin'

I do agree with using a DS Lite for flashcarts though. It's just so mush simpler.

No. Flipnote is the most notable example, it's only on the DSi and cannot even be transferred to the 3DS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flipnote_Studio
People have been asking for a 3DS version, but it's still not out.

cave story isnt even on dsiware anymore!,its now been replaced with a full 3DS version.
Cave Story is DSiware still.

The 3DS version is a different, later game.

I read that their GBA stuff was slow, but calling the DS one shit now is very ignorant. The DSTwo is the best flash cart. It's the ONLY flash cart that has NEVER needed a new hardware model to bypass a block.

1. flipnote studio hatena willl be coming out soon. just need to have patience!, also is there any reason you cant use Swapnote in the meantime?
i mean, this is like 50 drawing programs on the 3ds so far, you have a wide selection between Swapnote, Game Notes, inchworm animation, colors 3d, art academy, paint by ds, etc, etc, etc.

2.the old dsiware cave story is NOT available on the eShop anymore. it has been replaced by 3DS cave story. not sure what the dsi's store is like because my DSi is never updated so i can actually use flashcarts on it. (ANYBODY CAN CONFIRM THIS?)

but anyway, why would you buy an inferior version that wastes internal memory space instead of a 3D one? also, were talking about a game that was originally a pc freeware game. not exactly a must-buy.

3. supercard fanboy logic. the supercard is a horrible flashcart, expensive for no reason other than a crappy GBA emulator (which is redundant with a ez3in1), a spring loaded sd (on top no less), ugly menu system, awkard interface, lack of features, hard to set up, no list option, no built in EZ3in1 support, and nothing special about it that wasent copied from other, better cards.

the Cyclo ds came out of the gate with savestates and slow motion.
the acekard was the first to feature copy paste functions and wifi update.
even the M3i zero has some nice features.

supercard blatantly copied these featues into their ugly bloated software, after years and years of being completely left in the dust by the other flashcarts. now everybody praises them just because whining Noobs cant learn to STOP UPDATING YOUR FIRMWARE!

also the nonsence about no new hardware models is a complete lie. there was SC lite, then SC DS one, then SC DS one sdhc, then SC DS ONEi, then SC DS TWO.

1+2 - The point I was making was not "These softwares are the ones I want", the point was your claim that the DSi and 3DS shops are the same is false.

3a - The DSTwo's anti-AP code is the best of any DS cart we've seen. Unlike AKAIO, Wood, and others, EoS hasn't updated in ages because it doesn't need to. It was also, in the cases of games that had new types of AP (pokemon releases come to mind), the first cart to play those games... since it didn't need to update to do it (nowadays games rarely, if ever, come out with new AP, since the DS is dead).

3b - And how, praytell, would you use a 3-in-1 on the DSi or 3DS? Now, if somebody's going to get a flash cart for GBA games on the DS/Lite, yes a Slot-2 is better (you lose on easy cheat handling and save states and screenshots and stuff, but gain important speed and compatibility), and yes the supercard slot-2 is often shunned in favor of other carts. But for the slot-1, the DSTwo is just fine.

3c - It's not just a GBA emulator, there's SNES and DOS and such, but even outside of emulators there's real-time save, slow-motion, in-game cheat toggling, in-game text file reading, and more features that the DSTwo has. You may want to actually look into the product you're bashing, moreso than the team name attached to it at least.

3d - I did not say team supercwrd never came out with new products, I specifically said that the DSTwo never needed a hardware revision, unlike other carts. If you don't know what this means, then holy crap you need to get up to speed, as this has been one of the biggest concerns for flash carts on the DSi/3DS for a few years now. You might want to try with reading the stickies.

1. ok fair enough only 99% of Dsiware iis on the eshop, but whatever is missing will or has a better 3ds release. as is the case of Swapnote, CaveStory, pokedex 3D, or Tetris Party Live.

3. the Cyclo ds had great anti-AP, up until their departure. most of the games work fine with only a small number of the newest games needing to be patched, which is Not hard. the DS Scene Rom Tool automatically updates the AP database. its so simple even a monkey could do it.

and this is all ignoring the morality of illegally downloading a game only seconds after launch day. if Wal-Mart has them in stock theres no reason why you cant wait a few weeks before deciding to STEAL, YES STEAL a game. if you want a digital backup, just play your physical copy until the update. theres no excuse, and the scene should be bringing down the hammer on self-entitled noobs (pokemon fanboys) that have the audacity to demand the "latest hotness", rather than catering to their whims.

3. as for GBA, obviously a AGS-101 and EZFlashIV, are the best option,, second place goes to a Revo K1 gbasp, Third place alternative would be a DS Lite or phat with Extra Ram Pack (supports SNES and others).

Emulation on a DS is the absolute Last Resort, falling dismally behind a CFW PSP, a GCW Zero, a Dingoo, a GP2X canoo, Pandora, a jailbroken Iphone, Android device, Rockchip player, or pretty much ANY device with a screen and passable processor.

4. and Acekard2I never "needed" a hardware revision either. it works fine on my DS Phat, DS Lite, and DSi XL with 1.4.3 firmware. so i don't see what the problem is.
