Hi everyone, I currently own a Nintendo 3DS running version 6.1.0-12E.

Without any knowledge of certain card/console/firmware compatibility issues I went out and purchased an R4iTT v1.6 'DSi XL 3D' purple card (the one that says 'new' and has no screw on the back.)

So, obviously, I had no joy getting the card to run on my 3DS and have been refused a refund with the R4iTT.
I've asked for advice in all of the retailers around my town and nobody seems to be 100 % certain where I stand.

The only guy who sounded like he knew anything told me that I should keep the card but trade my 3DS for a DSi/DSi XL as there would be no compatibility issues regardless of firmware version. But is this correct?

and..

Which would be the best option for me here? Regardless of prices - as I said, I'd prefer to keep my 3DS and purchase a better card (if one is available), but is it impossible to use any R4 on the current firmware?

Any advice would be great!
Thanks,

GR13V3Y :)

Thanks ryupower,
This card looks great but I am only facing one problem with it.
The card is for my son who hasn't yet learned to read.
I've had a look on youtube at the supercard and it seems there is no image/icon to show which
Game he will be about to play(as I've seen on R4iTT).
Is this available on that card?
Or are there any other cards with that option which would be compatible with my specs?

Thanks,
GR13V3Y

Sorry, I've checked another video and the option is available to use on the supercard DSTwo. Are any other cards compatible, just out of interest?

Just because I've seen cards in deals with memory cards/preloaded games etc. included in the price for round about the same cost as the DSTwo?

Thanks again,

There are other carts, but if you want them to continue to work on a 3DS that is being actively updated by Nintendo to block such carts, you need one that has a lot of support so that it can continue to be updated to get around the anti-piracy measures.

The other carts that do work don't have nearly as much support, and are far more in danger of not receiving updates/not being able to update than the DSTwo, which has a fairly novel update system. Without continuous updates, a flash cart will quite simply no longer work with the console at all. Ever.

So it's best to shell out the extra $25 or so and get the DSTWO so that you have more longevity and less headaches down the road - especially since it's being used by your child.

Thanks PityOnU,
so would I be right in saying that if I purchased the DSTwo then I could still allow him to use the internet without the worry of the 3DS ever becoming bricked and the card never becoming incompatible?

See, the problem I face here is that:

I can do a straight swap for a DSi XL (which I just tried my R4iTT in and it works fine), although I lose a few features but already own a compatible cartridge for no more expense.

If I use Parent Control on the DSi XL, then I should be fine, as long as I upload the ROMs and nobody else knows the code.
Am I right in what I am saying?

I'm so confused! So my options are:
1) Keep 3DS, spend £30, forever safe from becoming bricked/incompatible
or
2)Swap for DSi XL, Save £30, but using Parent Lock will be safe forever...

am I right? To swap for DSi XL and parent lock will save me lots of money! and my child doesn't need internet.

your opinions please?

Thanks,
GR13V3Y

there is NO telling if Nintendio can block all flash card at some point

but
the supercard ds two has the best chance of working on newer FW

jut watch out for 3ds FW updates, and make sure you update the card 1st then the 3ds

The DSTwo is the only cart that has always gotten updates, but nothing lasts forever. In addition if he updates the 3DS you'll likely need to do secondary steps to update the DSTwo afterwards, since the 3DS updates always come out first (the flash cart updates come in response to the 3DS ones).

Also it's not just the internet. New 3DS games (yes, even physical carts) will make you update before they can be played, no internet needed (they contain the update required). This doesn't happen on the DSi/XL, where locking off internet means no updating will happen.

So if you're letting a kid use a 3DS with a flash cart, you're just asking for trouble. An older model DS is much easier and safer to stop from updating.

Thanks guys.
To be fair, he is too young to use the 3D feature on the 3DS.
And so DSi XL has won my vote I think.

So, DSi XL is safe as long as I don't let it update EVER again - or for that matter use real cartridges.
My only worry is if his friends want to play together wirelessly or share things through eachothers consoles - does this feature use the internet at all? or is this done using infa-red or something along those lines?

Basically, as long as I don't input my wi-fi password, or use real cartridges it is safe forever!
Hope this is right!? Think I'll go swap consoles in the morning.

Can someone just confirm that for me?
that he can still share sounds & pictures with friends/play games with friends with no need for ever updating through internet?

Just I don't wanna have to keep nervously peering over his shoulder to make sure nothing is downloading.

Thanks for your help guys, really appreciate it.

The DSi/XL isn't updated through game carts (so real DS games are fine), only by accessing Nintendo's e-shop and stuff... the problem is those options are on the main menu, so if he has internet access (playing online is done via the internet) he may be able to just click on the icon and be prompted for an update.

Local wireless needs no internet, but not many games use that feature compared to online.

He could take the DSi XL over to somewhere that has Wifi and get updated, so it's not foolproof to just keep him off the home internet.

Now, the DSi series hasn't been updated in a while and we don't think there's going to be another update... but they have surprised us before.

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it

@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.

Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.
