The characters are usually based on the latest game in the series, so it's somewhat surprising they didn't use Skyward Sword Link. Maybe the art style wouldn't fit in well.

I don't understand why people are complaining about the outlines.... if you think about Final Dest. on any of the games and then zoom it out to fit 4 players then take that screen and put it on a 3.5 inch screen. It makes sense to have an outline when you have to deal with two of the same character or when zoomed completely out.

What are you talking about? They all have outlines. Quite clearly even. Furthermore I think the outlines will help with visibility on the 3DS screen, that's why they added them...

Heck, I think Link's character model is pretty good on the 3DS. It looks like a step up from Twilight Princess.

The only one who does not have an outline is Spirit Tracks Link because he's part of the scenery and not a playable character.

The only one who does not have an outline is Spirit Tracks Link because he's part of the scenery and not a playable character.

Black outlines are exactly that outlines its not supposed to be some type of pseudo cell-shading, its supposed to make the character visible. Seeing how the 3DS cant achieve the HD graphics like the Wii U, I think the high-contrast and outlines give it a nice look, and help you distinguish characters from the background.
