Protective casing integrating parental controls for the Nintendo 3DS console
  • Detect if your child is too close to the screen and also control their playing time.
  • When the time has elapsed, the parental controls will exit the game being played.
  • It forces your child to take a 10 minute break in between each gaming session.
  • Supplied with a programming key for parents.
  • Easy to set up
Product highlights

  • Control playing time.
  • Detect the distance being used.

Ok what i want to know is how the hell this works
this must mean the parental controls can be modified by the IR reader

what do you guys think, hope if this gets strapped to a 3DS you know the owner saves often

Edit-
Video to explain a bit

from the way that thing looks, i thing no kid would be able to play with that control panel off to the side unless it can be removed

that's the programming key to set the time which is removable, i assume its screws into the bottom of the console too

Interesting, another useless thing for the 3DS (for most people ofcourse)
Btw dont you mean IR, not AR?
indeed i did

ok but if its screwed on what going to stop the kid from unscrewing that thing from his/her 3ds.
i don't think a 10 year old would not know what a screwdriver is, hell my cousin is 5 and he took his brother's ps2) a part with a screwdriver (good thing it was the broken ps2 and not the new 1)

lol indeed, the main issue here is, what can indeed be controlled through and external unit on the 3DS, assume it allows camera access to detect face and also how it can exist and stop gaming, but this means the camera can be controlled externally at all times, even when gaming

Can't help but wonder if you're thinking too hard about this (stupid) thing.
It probably stops gaming at the times by forcing the console into sleep mode with some similar magnets built in. For example, try setting an open DS/DSi/3DS on top of the top screen of another, it will go into sleep mode.

The too close to the screen probably just has some kind of sensor built into it and if it finds you "too close" it will probably trigger sleep mode the same way.

It's a stupid little device but it can't be that complex as the other posts are making it seem.

found a video, doesnt say how it turns it off tho

Neat idea. I would like to have seen options like this included in the 3DS's Parental Controls already though.

LOL, poor kids, why would someone even bother buying them a 3DS if they're just going to torture them with this shit? The 3DS looks like a car with a wheel clamp on it or someone on house arrest. I'm glad my parents didn't pull this type of shit on me when I was younger lol (although a quick meeting with a hacksaw would probably fix this right up)

I do not remember where I read this. If remember right this device is not good for 3DS, the shut down or power off feature of device after time is inputted to allow the system to be on is not good. Kills the battery.. then 3DS not able to turn on anymore... hmm something like this? -> it is kill the battery 2x faster than regular normal turning off/on.

Edit: My shit English! It happens!

Edit2: I think it was IRC I read this...

Yep, it's called .. keeping an eye on WTF your kid is doing. My 8 year old son has full access to 3 DSs, 2 DSis, 2 3DSs, 6 PSPs, an Xbox 360, a PS3, a Wii and a Gaming PC. I use a kitchen timer with a 5 minute warning (to save. of course). I think this gadget is as pointless as my 6 PSPs.

looks like it controls the 3ds via the sd card slot the micro sd to sd card adaptor has 2 leads to come in contact with the shell so looks like the adaptor has hardware inside it

Sir, I like the way you think.
