I am guessing I have to change my Wii Region. Any tips.

Also, what technically would I have to do to obtrain the said Japanese VC. Is it through Wad?

use a program called freethewads just drag the wad onto the exe on your comp and viola! i used to use it on usa ww games and they played on PAL. J games shouldn't be any different.

On the Wii, there is a setting file that determines the region and video mode.
A program like AnyRegion Changer can help with this, or perhaps a virtual NAND (sneek/uneek) to make life easier.

If you set the correct region and video mode, it will load everything for the region you want perfectly (i.e. Japanese and NTSC).
It will semi-brick your Wii when the region does not match the system menu region, meaning you cannot access the system settings.. you can still start the Wii and go load AnyRegion Changer to put it back.

Just freeing the WAD to make it region free will not guarantee that the WAD will load, as it may require a particular video mode (not necessarily region)..

Changing the region can potentially cause bricks if you are dealing with the Korean region however, as it will rely on Korean IOS' and system menus, and there is a slight difference between Korean files as opposed to the others..
A virtual NAND for the Korean region is generally highly recommended.

I know that sometimes taking an alternate region WAD and freeing it does not help.. it allows the WAD to load in the system menu, but does not guarantee the game will work when it is loaded, since it may require a specific video mode which is not changed or affected by simply freeing the WAD 'region' for the system menu to load it.

As far as I know, freeing the WAD is the equivalent to applying the 'region free channels hack' in priiloader - it simply allows all WADs from different regions to load.
Once the channel has loaded however, it may not work if the video mode, which is in the Wii's 'setting.txt' is not what it is looking for.

For 100% compatibility for the region you are looking for, simply use something like AnyRegion Changer to alter the video mode from PAL -> NTSC to ensure the game loads with its appropriate video mode, as well as the region so that one doesn't necessarily have to use a priiloader hack or 'free the WAD'.
Freeing a WAD or using the priiloader hack will not modify the 'setting.txt' video mode. It will simply work with the data within the actual WAD to set it from 'pal/usa/jap etc.' to 'free', allowing it to load on any system menu.. that region setting is inherent in the makeup of a channel.

Anyone can make a WAD and set its region (or make it region free).

The video mode, which is what will allow some of the alternate region games to work, can only be changed with something like AnyRegion Changer.

Freethewads has been known to not work with 'everything'.. sometimes there are inconsistencies in games after using it, especially PAL <-> NTSC, as opposed to NTSC-U <-> NTSC-J. It does not change the video mode.

Changing the video mode of the Wii with AnyRegion Changer will get the games to work, and ideally the region too, making it unnecessary to use Freethewads in the first place.

When the right video mode and region is set in the Wii's 'setting.txt', it should load that region's WAD perfectly.

It is better to set the right video mode for the game/channel you want to load, to ensure it loads 'how it is meant to'.

is it really worth my while in changing my region from PAL to NSTC-J to play Rolling Thunder and Star Blade VC Arcade...!
or just create an emulated NSTC-J Nand!

It is as simple as installing the WAD, and then using AnyRegion Changer in the Homebrew Channel to change the video mode and console country settings.
When you are done, you can put it back.

If you prefer a virtual NAND, it is much easier, since you have a Japanese System Menu and a Japanese 'setting' for the System Menu, begin able to load anything Japanese with ease.

There is neek2o which allows for multiple virtual NANDs which can be switched on-the-fly - you can set up different region virtual NANDs.

The only thing this way is that the savegame and channel/game logs will not be stored on your Wii's NAND.

If you would prefer sneek/uneek instead of neek2o, you can set up one virtual NAND and create multiple 'setting.txt' files with one of the programs that comes with ModMii.
You can simply just go to the 'data' part of the System Menu folder on the virtual NAND and rename/replace the setting.txt file for the region/video mode you would temporarily like.

This way, you can have the same NAND and it is like the equivalent of using AnyRegion Changer, except you would manually replace existing preset 'setting.txt' files.
You can even create some windows batch files to replace the setting.txt files around for you, making 'changing the region' as easy as running a batch file.

I believe neek2o does not load on BootMii/Boot2, but I may be wrong about this. Sneek/Uneek work this way, and is extremely convenient.

you could actually prob get them working in retroarch

Those aren't even FBA roms for starters. Also, Solvalou is a polygon game.

Anyway, @littlecubba you'll be happy to know that it is possible to run from emunand the 2 games you mentioned ( Rolling Thunder Arcade VC and Solvalou) on 4.3 Pal Wii.
Look out for wwpacker and fix the J wads with with regionfree plus. Then install them with wad manager on your emunand and after setting the loader options (on GX 248 i used default settings for RT and force PAL60, region patch settings on Solvalou) you can play them fine.

You can use a European emulated NAND and put a 'JAP' (or perhaps 'USA') setting.txt in the system menu data folder, to ensure that the video mode is set to NTSC (most important part). I believe there are tools out there to modify a 'setting.txt' for yourself and to change the video mode to NTSC.
You can even use a PAL virtual NAND and load AnyRegion Changer within the virtual NAND on the Wii to change the video mode (and region), with BannerBomb or an installed channel WAD of Homebrew Filter.. perhaps even a custom injected homebrew WAD with AnyRegion Changer..
It will definitely work for loading alternate region games perfectly, unless the game insists on having the Japanese language which is most easily set with a Japanese System Menu or by using homebrew to tweak the language settings (of which I'm not sure such a homebrew is easy to find).

If you would like to load these games through the System Menu and not another homebrew, setting the video mode and region (not really so important) is all you need.
You can have a PAL virtual NAND with PAL, USA and JAP WADs on it.. when you want to play a PAL game, use AnyRegion changer within the virtual NAND to set the region and video mode to EUR and PAL. When you want to play a USA game or JAP game, change the region to USA/JAP and video mode to NTSC. It will guarantee every game will load.

For GameCube games, if you want to play them with Progressive Scan, simply doing a region free patch on the disc channel is not enough.. The Wii has to be set to NTSC video mode (with the 'setting.txt') to even allow the prompt for progressive scan to show up.
Even playing NTSC GameCube games with progressive scan active will work with this method.

On the v3.2 System Menu, system menu patches like with PriiLoader/StarFall would work to let GameCube games play with progressive scan when activating the 'video mode patch'. After v3.2, applying the 'video mode patch' is not enough - one has to force the setting in the 'setting.txt' for the video mode to have an affect on the game and its requirement.

The 'setting.txt' video mode makes a difference - it's not just about region patching the disc channel / wad. Region patching does not modify the video mode of the Wii's 'setting.txt'.

neek2o makes life easy with the ability to switch multiple NANDs on-the-fly and is a great virtual NAND homebrew.

had problems trying to create an emunand using ModMii, even using a simple walkthrough...
SUCCESS!
ended up using wwpacker region-free-plus and worked a treat on my PAL v4.1 Wii...
only problem though, i have to press the power button to switch the Wii off after playing a game instead of pressing the home button and selecting main menu...
no biggie, something i can live with...

thanks for you help

With ModMii, all you need is to build a very basic NAND that can be loaded with something like neek2o..

The basic requirements are:
System Menu
System Menu IOS (and perhaps all other IOS' for all the software that can be loaded on the Wii)
setting.txt in the title/00000001/00000002/data/ folder (i.e. system menu folder).

That is all that is needed.
You can get all the appropriate WAD files above with ModMii or NUSD, and use 'ShowMiiWADS' to extract/unpack the above WADs into a new folder as a 'NAND'. You can then use the setting program that comes with ModMii to build 4 generic setting.txt files for the different regions PAL/USA/JAP/KOR.

That is all you need.
Once you load the above contents in neek2o it will build the appropriate files when loading it the first time (can take a little bit of time) as though it is the first time you power on the Wii, with the initial settings configuration.

I think with ModMii the idea is to create a virtual NAND (presumably for loading USB as opposed to SD) by selecting the virtual NAND / uneek (sneek for SD loading) option in the menu. It should get the System Menu, IOS', and other channels as well like the region select, EULA, Mii Channel, etc.

All this can be done as well with manually acquired WADs with something like NUSd and then extracted into a folder with ShowMiiWADs to create a NAND.

For run a NTSC-J WAD for run in a NTSC-U Wii, just try using FreeTheWads, but if it doesn't work, try using WiiGF from wwPacker (https://gbatemp.net/download/wwpacker.36649/).
For patch a NTSC-J VC WAD for force it to run in NTSC in a PAL Wii, you can use @stev418's Custom NAND Loader MOD 1.1 which can be downloaded here:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/custom-nand-loader-mod-1-1.198242/
For apply that patch you will need the wwPacker v1.84 tool which can be downloaded here:
https://gbatemp.net/download/wwpacker.36649/
Greetings ;)
