I currently have my setup like this: Wii U to A/V Reciever with Hdmi, Reciever to Hdtv with Hdmi.
On Wii U settings I put it on Surround mode, I am able to hear all 5 tones one on each speaker. The problem is for all apps and games that I currently have which are Nintendo Land and New Super Mario bros U I get Multich on reciever but I actually only get sound from the left and right front speakers. So im actually forced to put All Channel Stereo on my reciever to have all speakers recieve equal sound. Any body know whats going on, thout the Wii U supported Lpcm 5.1, who else has a similar problem. Thanks

For now, it looks like we'll have to set the audio to stereo and let our AV receivers do the rest. Man, I had thought it was just Wii mode that only had 2 active channels in 5.1 LPCM. Wii mode only needs 2 channels, but there is currently no support for Wii "surround" mode; there's only stereo and then more stereo in 5.1. WTF? Our AV receivers can't make surround out of that! Nintendo: UPDATE. PLEASE. ASAP!!

In short, it boils down to the fact that the surround sound audio data coming from the Wii-U is 6 channel uncompressed LPCM data, NOT Dolby Digital AC3 5.1 or DTS. Some receivers may not support this audio format and will fall back to 2 channel mode when getting that data. Probably because Nintendo didn't want to pay royalties to Dolby and such just to support their format.

My receiver supports it; the Wii U surround test works for all 5 speakers, the readout says "MULTICH", it just doesn't work for any content, period. L & R are the only channels active. Sure, some receivers don't support multi-channel PCM, but mine most certainly does. It's a 9.2 receiver that can handle uncompressed 7.1.

UPDATE: Arkham City: Armored Edition works beautifully in multi-channel surround (the framerate ain't great, but it's playable). I haven't played AC III yet, but I expect the same. I guess this means first party games (and the System Menu) are stereo, and if the Wii U doesn't do real-time surround decoding, why not drop into 2 channel PCM instead of making us deal with 6 channels with only 2 active channels. As it stands surround mode precludes surround decoding; it only supports discrete surround in specific games. If you want surround at all times you'll have to switch modes manually. FTLOG Nintendo, WHY??

I dunno what you're receiver readout says, but with mine, in both surround and stereo mode it reports Pro Logic II sound, which is multichannel buried in a stereo stream. Darksiders did not operate properly on surround sound settings, but it sounds fine in stereo mode.

The surround setting has issues, and it's really bringing my appreciation for this console down. Most newer receivers support 6 channel LPCM, but no guarantees if it's more than 3 years old. Some incompatible receivers play back only two out of the six channels when receiving a multichannel LPCM signal. My receiver is compatible with the Wii U's 6 channel LPCM surround mode, displaying 'Multich' when surround mode is set. This works great when the audio content is 6 channels: L,C,R,SUB,RS,LS but the problem for my setup is that much audio content (everything so far from Nintendo, including the system menu) is only two channel, which would be fine if it were played back in 2 channel LPCM, but it's presented as 6 channels with only L&R active, C,SUB,RS,LS are present, yet silent, which precludes matrix surround decoding. This is exceedingly odd behavior; cable boxes, for example, drop into 2 channel PCM during commercials, displaying 'Stereo' or 'PLII Movie' and then back to 'Dolby D' during the program, and some DVD and Blu-Ray players give the option to play back 2 channel sources as Stereo PCM or matrixed surround decoding (PLII or Neo:6).
Nintendo is likely too cheap to license one of the matrixed surround formats for real-time surround decoding of 2 channel sources. Their right to use Factor 5's Musyx audio tools has likely also dried up, as the company is gone; the Wii's 'surround' setting seems to be unsupported, except in games with a specific surround setting in the options, and this only in Wii U's stereo mode. Even in Wii mode, the 6 channels with 4 channels silent remain present, and the Wii is a 2 channel system. The only workaround at this point is the 'stereo' setting combined with PLII or DTS on the receiver, but that method sounds nowhere near as good as the 6 channel option with 6 channel content.:nayps3:

I see. That must be why darksiders sounded off. Center channel specific sounds were not coming out (like voice audio) but ambient sounds were. My receiver must be incompatible.

Check the manual. If it supports discreet channel surround input (not dolby digital or dts or any of the encoded surround sound standards), then you should be good.
