OP
Q. Can download software saved to USB media be played on another Wii U?
A. No. Download software can only be used on 1 Wii U per 1 USB media.

Q. Where is software that I purchased a download for saved to?
A. Internal memory or USB media. Download software can't be saved to the SD card.

Sucks but not a dealbreaker for me. Wii U games will be pretty large so a large hard-drive makes more sense than a SD card.

In other words, the Deluxe package just got more Deluxe.

By 1 USB media, do they mean some sort of drive signing, so that the Wii U can only use one? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the option to add storage in the first place?

Gonna agree with soulx here, it sucks but it's nothing dealbreakerish. Falls in the "minor nitpicks I can bitch about" category.

In general Nintendo needs to step it up with data storage. Like it's great that they don't use proprietary media but the hard drive on the Wii U is disappointingly small and storage on the Wii was a pain in the ass.

They mean you can't take your USB HDD, take it to your friends WiiU and play the games on it there... I think. Pretty much the same as the SD-3DS locking. I assume only the files will be encrypted/signed/whatevered though, not the entire drive.

Eh. It's not like the WiiU supports SDXC anyway, so the max size it can take is 32GB - considering full retail games are coming on disks with blu-ray capacity, that's not even a single game. Not a dealbreaker.

OK I have done some digging abd it appears the SD card slot is solely to keep wii backwards compatibility. All wii games (virtual console and wiiware and saves) are transferred to sd card for system transfer. Wiiware purchased can still be stored either to system or sd memory from eshop, just like wii. WiiU games are stored in system or hdd. x4 HDD can be used at the same time.

It's mostly because of read and write speeds, the Wii U reads disks at 22.5 MB/s or 150x, which is incredibly fast. There's no way SD cards will reach that, class 10 is only 10MB/s. A harddrive can reach the required speed with ease.
For reference the PS3's disk media are read at 9MB/s.

Not a dealbreaker, and doesn't effect me. The only thing that I see as a con from this revelation is that SD card slot related hacks, using malformed game data, won't be an option, no matter how slim a chance that was anyways. Although does anybody know if save data can be backed up to the SD card still?

That is really dumb, so the SD card slot if basically useless then? I was going to use the SD card slot to store wii u save files I don't want my save files to be locked down to my console :(

even the ps3 lets you save save files to a usb stick or sd card, so why can't the wii u?

I don't care about digital downloads and won't be downloading retail games from the eshop so I don't really need a very big hard drive at all just mainly for save backup and maybe wii u game demos if we get that feature that is.

Save files are most likely stored there, the news only mentions playable digital games.

Is there any confirmation that digital content can played from the USB?
Well that's the idea.

well according to what he is saying wii u save files won't be saved to a SD card, only to a external hard drive.

There's nothing to back up that claim, Nintendo's only comment is that Wii U games won't be playable from it. That's why he can't find info on what the SD slot will be used for.
I see no reason why people would assume you can't store saves on there.
