Epic Music = Good Game ?

I don't think that music makes or breaks a game. That said, a game that's usually really good all around often means a lot of effort was put in, and it shows, usually even in the music. But that's just my experience. For example, Metroid: Other M was a very bad to mediocre game (yeah, I did somewhat enjoy it overall, but that's besides the point), and the soundtrack was easily the most abysmal I've ever heard in a Metroid game.

Alternatively, some Sonic games are great examples of games with amazing soundtracks, but just weren't that good as games.

You make a thread about epic music and don't even list/know about Nier?
Oh dear.

I enjoyed Nier for multiple reasons, but the definite highlight is its soundtrack. It has a godlike OST and up till now I still haven't heard a better one. Its starts off good, but I think it really hit me when I first walked out of town and this started playing:

Fell in love. Played straight through.

EDIT: and youtube linking is being a POS. Not bothering to try getting it into embedded video form.

well final fantasy 13-2 had like 2-3 good songs but the rest of the music was pure trash. they had to reuse ff 13 songs, those don't count tho for my music rating. another lazy cheap game by Square enix lazy cabbage. I mean dlc is cool but now almost every game has dlc which is a load of bull.

This has always been the case for me. If a game's music is meh, chances are I'm not going to stay interested in it. It's not like I love every game that has epic music, it has to at least be decent in other regards too, but epic music makes me a lot less picky about other aspects of the game.

The Kirby games: That is all. Kirby's Return to Dreamland rivals even Kirby Air Ride and Kirby Super Star as having the best music in the series (to me), and that's really saying something.

Tony Hawk 1-4 seem to fit this theme, most of the Castlevanias, And Burnout 3/revenge seem to as well.

to me, i think it's only (at least) 1/3 of the game.
i guess it'd be like
1/3 - Gameplay / Mechanics
1/3 - Sound / Music
1/3 - Visuals / Artstyle etc

story really goes last if at all for me.

you can have 2/3 of those and still have a good game i think, 3/3 and it's awesome.
but there are games that only 1/3 - gameplay and they're still good, then that is some GOOD gameplay.

I hold music on a very high pedistal, great music can actually make me enjoy (or tolerate) a crappy game experience. I don't hold it as high as gameplay and graphics because without the former it is not a game and without the latter it is not a video game, but I can, and often do, play games without music. Still, I do think that great game can make a mediocre game enjoyable (ie...well, I don't have any games on hand for this) and a bad game tolerable (ie Cheetahmen). It's a shame that more developers don't put emphasis on music (in the West, at least), but I guess that comes from the fact that there are so many gamers that don't really care about the music in a game so long as it isn't always silent.

I also think that a game could be considered great for its music alone; it's really the reason that I have so much interest in Touhou Project, which brings me to my next point. I also think that crappy music in a game can have the opposite effect. If Mass Effect sounded like Crazy Bus, it would have a much smaller fanbase, even if you can turn the music off. So, in short, I do think a great music can breed a good game, even if it is only supported by other mediocre facets (not always, though, it depends on the game), but it won't have as much effect on the experience as a game with a great story or great gameplay (moreso the latter than the former).

Epic music does indeed help make or break a game. Many a game wouldn't be as awesome if it weren't for the music. For example, Dark Cloud 2 would have been kinda bland if it wasn't for the excellent background music. The opening alone made the game worth just booting it up to play for even a short amount of time.

Dark Cloud2/Dark Chronicle was just all around amazing, the music definitely helped though, Veniccio theme is probably my favorite. (I'm not sure if playing the flute makes me biased towards the music in this game though)

Agreed, the island theme was really catchy. Although my personal favorite was the Balance Valley chapter.

That being said, I loved the Luna Labs futuristic sound the best.

That and the Mt. Gundor chapter were easily some of my favourite points in the game. I freaked when I saw Paznos.

EDIT: Oh, and by my previous comment, DC2 had some awesome game play. I don't mean the game would be bland if it didn't have such great music, but the mood would be ruined. :(
