How to play GameCube games off a USB HDD.

Welcome to my guide! This will teach you to "backup" your games that you TOTALLY legally own. Right?
This guide is completely compatible with Windows, Mac (Wine), and Linux (Wine). I do not have access to an Apple machine, but theoretically, it should work. Please note that this guide requires you to format your HDD, however you can still use it for storage after we're done, so just back it up before we begin.

NOTE BY A MODERATOR :

There are different methods to play Gamecube games off a USB HDD, and this outdated guide will only tell you ONE method.
It will not explain to you how to run gamecube games from USB HDD, but instead will tell you to do things blindly and install specific outdated files and use a specific outdated USB Loader version.
It doesn't cover other USB HDD methods or other Gamecube loaders.
Don't follow this guide if you want updated informations, updated loaders or if you want to use a different gamecube loading method.

You can follow it only if you want DIOS MIOS 2.8 (outdated) and CFG Loader v70 r36 (outdated).
Thanks for reading,
Cyan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You will need:
-An SD Card
-A USB HDD
-Wii Mote
-GameCube Controller
-A Wii with Homebrew Channel installed
-A GameCube iso

Download Links:

COMPUTER:

1.) Download WiiFlow from the Download List above. Put it in the apps folder of your SD Card.

2.) Download the DIOS MIOS v2.8 RAR. Go to 'DM', then move 'DIOSMIOS_2.8' to the root folder of your SD card, or for easier installation put it in a folder on the root titled 'wad'.

3.) Download MMM, and put it in your apps folder.

4.) In the DM folder in the RAR, there will be a file named DMToolbox.exe, run it, select your games iso file, and choose where you want the game's folder to go (Desktop will do.). Hit 'Install', and the folder will appear where you wanted it to, it will be named the game's ID, which will, to you, appear to be a bunch of random characters.

5.) Download and Install EaseUS Partition master, and open it. Find your HDD, and right click it, and select 'format'. Format it as FAT32 with 32KB Clusters. *DON'T IGNORE! Press OK, and then "Apply".

6.) Look at your empty HDD, and make a 'games' folder. Put the folder with the Game ID in there.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WII:

1.) Plug in your HDD in USB Slot 0. Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch MMM.

2.) Choose WAD Manager on the menu and install DIOSMIOS_2.8.wad

3.) After you're done, exit MMM. Launch WiiFlow.

4.) Go to Settings, and change game partition to USB1

5.) Press 'B', and select the Gamecube icon

7.) Choose a game and press Start. Every time you add new games, you have to hit the home icon, and hit update cache, and your game list will refresh.

Congratulations! You can now play GC games from your USB HDD!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFG USB LOADERv70 r36:

COMPUTER:
Follow steps 3-7 in the COMPUTER guide above.

WII:

1.) Follow step 3 in the guide above.
2.) Install DIOS MIOS using MMM.
3.) Launch CFG USB Loader.
4.) Click the icon with tools on it
5.) Set "DML Version" to DM.
6.) Launch your game!

I do have pimp my wii.
I've heard the name of that app but I don't know much about it. If it can install WADs then I'm sure that will work.
There's lots of apps that can install WAD's

Multi Mod Manager (MMM)
WAD Manager
WAD Manager Mod
Yet Another WAD Manager
Yet Another WAD Manager Mod (YAWMM)
WiiMod
WAD Manager GUI
DOP-Mii (kinda)
and I'm sure there are more.

When you hit the home button in HBC, what IOS does it say it's actually using? (up in the top, right corner.) While you're at it, just to be sure, see what version it actually SAYS. If it's not using IOS58 you can run the HackMii installer and install again (it should tell you in the install process which IOS it's going to use.) if it STILL doesn't use IOS58 you might need to install a CLEAN copy of IOS58 (You can get that in ModMii.)

Yeah, that's "right" since 1.0.8 should still have AHBPROT but the newest version of is actually 1.1.0 so you could always update but it's probably not the problem here.
Are you just running CleanRip from the HBC directly or some other way? Do you have a meta.xml file in the folder with CleanRip?

yeah i read about the meta.xml file thought that might be the prob but it does have one in there and i'm running CleanRip from HBC may be a bad download worth a try. By the way
i was trying to go along without CLEANRIP and i had a game cube disc not an original but i put it in the wii and ripped it with usb loader gx and it ripped nicely gave it the numbers and all.Maybe it wont work but i was wondering can i use 4gig flash drive or does it have to be an ext hdd some flash drives do not give the option to make fat32 32kb clusters would fat work or does it have to be fat32?Hope all makes sense cheers.by the way the game cube disk was mine at one time i gave it to a mate.

To play off of the DVD-R backup directly, you would need
1. an old enough wii to have a drive capable of reading DVD-R disks (just pop it in the drive and if the disk channel changes to a GameCube logo, you're good. If not, no luck.
2. install either the Waninkoko cMIOS or the WiiPower+WiiGator cMIOS (you can get them from ModMii) and then you can run it from the disk channel but an important note: they will replace DM(L) so you'd have to re-install DM(L) if you ever wanted to run a game off of USB or SD again.

So that's good, you're Wii is DVD-R compatible. You will just need to run ModMii on your computer to download and install either one of those cMIOS WAD files and install it in order to actually PLAY the disk.

So what exactly happened when you tried ripping it with GX?

It ripped fine as i said before but i just can't see the game in any usb loaders i set my flash drive the right way and put a folder on the root called games. No just remembered when i ripped it, it went to the sd card so i took it off it and put it to the usb prob should have tried it on sd card.

I hope I don't sound repetitive but just confirming, so your other gamecube games on USB showed up just fine but this one didn't? and ripping it with GX and then moving it gave you a file like this :
USB1:/games/game name[XXXXXX]/game.iso
is that right?
Do you have your custom paths set to USB1:/games/ for the main gamecube path?

Sorry if i don't explain myself very well. This is my first game cube game when i said in previous posts that i have games on my USB they are WII games.Yes it ripped and gave me
game name [xxxxxx] now i don't see /game.iso. No when i tried it off sd card i can see it, and i get that fatal error apploader size is zero.Surely the /game.ISO is not the problem and should i label my USB to USB1?. I did set my custom paths earlier but i will check again but even if i did see it on the USB would i not be getting the same error as off my sd card so i hope i have explained it as clear as i can and thank you for your patience.

I was just doing a bit of reading and i found this post from maxternal just wanted to no if it would fit my prob may be not i don't now here is some of the post

Okay, basically for every one that's having this problem with version 2.2 (and higher once that's applicable) There's a setting you have to set to tell it you're using that version of DM(L) otherwise it will just try to boot the disk in the drive and will give you the " fatal error: apploader size is zero!" if the drive is empty or the drive doesn't have a GC game disk in it. (if it DOES have one in it, it will just boot the retail disk)

This is true for CFG,
c204.gif
WiiFlow, GX, and DM(L) Booter.
(just that some of those will just assume you have v2.2 or higher unless you tell it so the option STARTS as being ON)

- You should label it USB1 (since a USB hard drive can have multiple partitions, USB1, USB2, USB3, etc.)
- Since you wanted to run off the hard drive, you installed DM (Dios-Mios) but if you wanted to run off the SD card you would install DML (Dios-Mios-Lite) that's why you're getting the error on SD. It should be fine off of USB with DM as long as the settings are right but it will ALWAYS give that error on SD unless you install DML and replace DM.
- There are two "custom path" settings for GameCube games. One will only let it be on SD. The other one (the "main" one) you want to be on USB1.
- If all else fails and you can't get it to work you could still run it off the disk since replacing DM(L) with a cMIOS will not effect Wii games from USB and (for now) you only have ONE GameCube game. You can still open the game with the disk icon in GX as well as the disk channel.
