Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

Now, this is copied and pasted from wikipedia. I was reading through several articles and go in depth. But I would like to know from people personally.

The bold and large font bits concern me. I want to be diagnosed and I am serious about it. My currecnt GP(doctor) is an asshole.. and I would say NHS in general is shitty these days.

I do the same errors again and again. Also, I realise my restricted and repetitive behavior o.o. This all may sound stupid, but I just dont know how to tell this to the doctor. I mean, I am friggin 21.. should I have not been diagnosed before?

I simply cant tell or explain it to people how I feel about this..

Self diagnosing yourself for a disorder where you only have one-third of the symptoms is pretty ridiculous.

Plus who wants to be diagnosed with autism? Like seriously, it's a pretty horrible disorder that unfortunately many people are struck with through just sheer bad luck.

Perhaps you should seek a diagnosis for hypochondria instead.

I'm due to be tested for Asperger's Syndrome in a few days myself. Quite a few of my friends have it and they recognise aspects of it in me. Like the way I always end up fiddling with something with my fingers (usually my hair) when I'm being absent minded. My way of speaking, of acting, my inability to comprehend certain social situations, all apparantly indicators of Asperger's. Will post again when I get my results 'cause I should have more in depth stuff by then.

Same errors again and again? Are you talking about your love life?

I'm with Guild on this, I think you're getting all hypochondriac on us. Self diagnosis has an amazing tendency to lead to paranoia.

EDIT: If you do autism, than your probably would have been noticed by now. I won't deny the possibility you really are autistic. Ultimately you probably aren't.

EDIT 2: I doubt you going to find vaguely good advice here as I imagine most people here have fuck all medical qualifications.

I am a doctor. I studied at the University of Google with a BSc in WebMD.

I can confirm that you are a Hypochondriac and should seek professional advice from a licensed consultant (preferably private if at all possible because the NHS is indeed sketchy at best).

hypochondria could be another thing.. but you say 1/3, that is still something though. Perhaps that isnt related to autism however..

You always penalize me cuz of my shitty love life. But I am not gonna lie, perhaps its partly what I was referring to. There are other things too though.

Good for you :/

Seriously, I know its stupid to ask these things on here but no harm in a discussion. If you havent got anything to contribute than might as well not :).

I can only comment on what I know of my daughters version of it, which is meant to be very mild and apparently won't even be noticeable at all when she's 12 so it might not apply to someone with a stronger condition.

She initially had problems with talking, knew all words etc but had problems with executing them probably...though that is all sorted now. Did you have that but at the same time was your reading, writing or maths were a lot more advance than a child a few years older than yourself?

She had some repetitive things that she has now overcome thankfully, like when she was 3 she would point to a pushchair and you'd have to say "yeah you have a pushchair too" otherwise she'll get depressed (really no idea why and it did annoy me but whatever it made me more patient and tolerant).

You should have been diagnosed before though I don't know what support your parents had when you was a baby. Nowadays all kids have someone who looks into a child's development just in case they have some kind of disorder then they can treat it sooner and this is whether they show signs or not, it's just a standard.

For me NHS isn't shitty at all, they've been fucking amazing to me, Evie and her mum not just looking at the child's welfare but also making sure parents aren't suffering from anything. They got this all sorted out quickly and tactfully. Nowadays it's a lot easier to tell if someone has this condition especially in older people so maybe you should get a second opinion from another Doctor, if they so no then you don't have it.

If anyone who had repetitive behaviors was considered autistic then a good portion of the world would have autism.

Disorders aren't pizza. If you have a third of a pizza pie you still have pizza. If you have a third of the symptoms that doesn't mean you have the disorder or disease.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I bolded the part that applies to me. A few years back when I used to live in north london, chase farm hospital was great. The local GP was great too.
I guess its just my local area with horrible treatment. We dont even have a proper "appointment" system at our local GP. You just pop in... unless you have a report coming and need to be seen at a specific time. The doctor doesnt even spend time to hear you out. I complained before but didnt make much of a difference..

What are the actual 'symptoms' you have? I'm sure they can ba rationalised into more mundane explanations?

repetitive behavior - I do certain things again and again. I am not only referring to the love life, if you were going into that. (That can be linked to OCD too however..) "Restricted behavior is limited in focus, interest, or activity, such as preoccupation with a single television program, toy, or game." - The bolded part applies to me 100%

Sameness is resistance to change; for example, insisting that the furniture not be moved or refusing to be interrupted.

Communication(linked to repetitive behavior) - I seem to lack communication skills. I do and say things over and over again. Now this may be minor towards most people, but when I develop "something" to someone or at a certain stage it gets back to similar conversation or similar situation again and again, due to me using the same sentences, words or actions.

Now, I am copying things from the web for you to understand the basic issues that I have. The things I mentioned branches out and links to a lot of other activities.

I thought about this for almost 6 months before I posted this topic..

Are you after claiming disability allowance or something? Unfortunately the government don't give you extra money for being a socially inept nerd. If they did I'd be rich by now.
No, I am not :).
I dont claim benefits. The only money I took from government was EMA.

I also exhibit aspects of it myself. In fact, I'm playing with my hair right now.

I highly suggest you approach your doctor saying "I self diagnosed myself with autism through a couple of Google searches and a perusing of WebMD" and see just exactly what he thinks.

No offense but having one or two symptoms of a disorder doesn't mean you have it. I've had nausea and diarrhea for a while now but it doesn't mean I'm suffering from anthrax exposure.

I would be glad if I am not autistic of course! I am not begging to be autistic you know. You are making it sound like "I WANNA BE AUTISTIC". I am trying to find out what are the possible causes for the things that I mentioned, if its not autism. Just seeking help or advice, thats all?
This is an open discussion. I am just saying how I feel about it o.o

You cannot diagnose yourself with Autism. Being, to quote Depravo, an inept nerd does not make you autistic. Autism is not some sort of label you can drape around yourself.

If you're so convinced, see a fucking doctor. I'd love to hear what one has to say.

Your now edited out sentence saying "I want to be diagnosed" was a bit misleading. It sounded like you wanted to be diagnosed with autism. Because that's what you said.

I think the possible causes for this is because people do repetitive behaviors and have issues communicating all the time. I'm not exactly a social bug so yeah, I'll be socially awkward at times, and I also do a few things constantly and repetitively, but that in no way means I have autism. It means I'm just not a super social person and I have my quirks. Everybody does this to some extent.

People study for years to be able to be licensed to detect autism. 6 months of casual Googling isn't an equivalent to that.
