I just got my first 3DS yesterday.

I'm planning to get a flash cart for it, currently favoring the Supercard DStwo.
On the System Settings screen it says "Ver. 2.1.0-4E".

Now I would like to avoid updating the firmware until I understand what the consequences are.
I think that if I update the 3DS firmware, the Supercard DStwo would become unreadable and I would need a NDS to boot it and enable the corresponding SCDS2 update.

I inserted Super Street Fighter 4 and it asked if I wanted to do an offline update, which I declined. The game worked regardless. Does the SSF4 cart contain the system update?

How do I prevent automatic updates?

If I enable SpotPass to get the free "surprise" games, will it cause automatic updates to occur?

Thanks for your time!

It should not affect your Ds2 unless Nintendo started offering system updates in outgoing games, which is possible but I doubt it. If you haven't already you can shut off auto updates in INternet options > spotpass.auto software downloads but I believe it will also stop your getting notices from the 'notification menu too. I suggest shutting off the option below that which stops Nintendo from checking your Activity Log, (This info compared to thousands of others and the knowledge of the various headers/updates, tells a lot...

Which I am convinced is how they are deciding which cards are being used...(by following the activity log and subsequent changes in the peoples game play games used and comparing that to known card headers it is not hard to figure out, just hard to prove. (without proof it provides N an educated guess.) They are not picking these updates randomly... They're ahpppening far too often for that.

There's a method to thier madness you can be sure of that. I have been tracking which cards are being blocked and the various f card update releases and system updates. The three are powerful pieces of info. it reveals a telling picture. I can almost predict when the next ones arrive. I knew the DS1i/mini would be next and soon as the unusual header choice stood out, very easy to spot after last update suddenly thousands of English systems all playing one single SAME asian game?) and was just released a week ago. BAMN blocked after a whole year overlooked.

N has almost never blocked every single card at the same time since not all F cart updates are out at the same time. That can only mean they are keeping track also. To protect themselves it behooves them to keep watch of these things too. They didn't get wealthy being stupid about theses things.
