Okay, now that I've had the time to play with this tablet a bit, time to flesh out this post!
Nexus Root Toolkit gives the easiest way to unlock and root your Nexus 7 and flash a custom recovery. Once I got the drivers installed, it took about 45 seconds to unlock it it and another minute to flash the superboot bundle and CWM Touch
Nexus 7 Kernel, ROM, and Guide collection
On mine, I am running the MoDaCo Jr5 rom with the Atlantis R2 kernel. I'm at 23.5 hours on battery with 62% left with light to fair use throughout the day, wifi and bluetooth on. Performance is great so far, and there are already a lot more roms out for this thing than there were last night when I last checked. I'm hoping AOKP get's ported to this once they come out with a good JB release - they released a JB alpha for AOKP on Galaxy Nexus phones, and it's great so far.
The stock LCD density on the tablet is 213. I dropped it down to 160 so I could get the tablet UI. It's fantastic, but every once in a while text appears to be ever so slightly mis-drawn, so I am gonna play with it some more and see if there's anything a little higher that makes it just right.
I put Nova Launcher on it and used 4 bucks of the Google Play credit to buy the Pro key finally. I've found apps on Google Play that are listed as incompatible but work fine -_- like the TD Bank app, which is basically a custom frame for their mobile website; pulled the APK from my phone and sideloaded it on the tablet no problem.
MoDaCo was a cool guy and released the Nexus 7 Camera Launcher, which gives you a Camera shortcut since the tablet doesn't have one built in.
