The agency made a statement last week clarifying that the sea species is not real after they received a few calls following a fictional Animal Planet show called Mermaids: The Body Found that confused some viewers as fact. After the May airing of the fiction show, designed to have a format similar to a documentary, some viewers had called the NOAA to learn more about the creatures.The agency released a statement under it's Ocean Facts section putting the theories to rest.​

Despite the headline I think the real story is how gullible people were to not realize it's a fictional show. Although it's SLIGHTLY understandable since the show is on Animal Planet, a station known for it's documentary style coverage (I think.) Also the show is called "Mermaids: The Body Found" so I GUESS you could tune in mid show, see the title and start combing their hair with a fork, the Poor Unfortunate Fools. There are 2 "My Little Mermaid" references in my previous sentence.
