Scientists Make Breathing Redundant, Unnecessary

no modification needed, we already produce tiny cells to carry oxygen
lungs still needed to get something for them to carry
If I'm reading correctly, these particles gives out oxygen throughout the body even if your lungs are failing you or just fail.
Other words, these particles give them something to carry, they aren't meant to carry oxygen. That
would be redundant.

The only thing to worry about is CO2, which is what people keep bring up in that article.
 
Of all the strenuous activities out there, breathing is just the worst. I mean, you have to remember to breathe in AND out all the time; there's no breaks or anything. Plus, absolutely everybody does it now, from the young and hip to the old and crotchety. What's up with that, right?

Breathing is a rhythmic, involuntary process regulated by respiratory centers. You don't have to remember nor be conscious of breathing, otherwise you'd die sleeping from asphyxiation.

You'd be amazed at how popular a misconception it is.

So long as my post enlightens even one GBATemper, I'd say mission accomplished.

I'd be worried if someone on the temp (or anyone, for that matter) actually thought they had to constantly remember to breathe.

It would be such a relief for them to realise they don't have to think about it constantly

Nope, it wouldn't. And add to that the fact that you'll still feel massive body discomfort at not breathing. Your body will tell you "BREATHE, YOU FOOL" with all its power.

As long as we can't fool our body in not doing that anymore, no awesome underwater-breathing (which still isn't possible as salt water would be rejected by our lungs) for now.

What'll happen to the release of CO2? Will the lungs just... stop? No respiration at all?

in most people the need to breath is triggered by the level of co2 in the blood
that means this stuff would not cause them to stop breathing
only a minority uses the oxygen level to regulate breathing
Its possible that they would stop but I doubt it

(thats the common reason for drowning when taking deep breaths before diving;
it eliminates the "fealt" need to breath much more than the actual biological need,
causing you to black out because before you feel the urge to breath)

but since the this stuff is meant to be administered to people who already can't breath it does not really matter

If they manage to genetically modify the body to produce these particles within, would we no longer have to rely on lungs?
If your lungs are working properly, then you will still be compelled to breathe just the same as you are now. We do not breathe because of the lack of oxygen; rather, breathing is an involuntary action caused by the presence of CO2 in the blood. Even if you were being fed this substance through an IV, your body would still be producing CO2. That CO2 would trigger you to breathe as you normally do.

If the lungs aren't working, these microparticles can only buy you a few extra minutes in the ER. The reason is that as CO2 builds up in the blood, it mixes with the water in your body to form carbonic acid. This makes your body extremely acidic, a phenomenon called respiratory acidosis. It can lead to coma and shutdown of other important organ systems. So even if you could keep your tissues oxygenated, you'd still have to get rid of CO2. The only way to get rid of it is by exhaling. So breathing is still necessary, even if getting oxygen to the tissues is no longer an issue. Doctors can use the microparticles to prevent brain damage, but if they don't work fast, there is still a risk of death due to secondary complications.

Of course not, because then we'd have idiots all over the world thinking they can breathe underwater. We'd see a spike in drowning accidents in the news headlines.

Anyway, this made me remember of that scene of Star Wars the phantom menace, where Obi-wan and his master (can't spell correctly the name) dive underwater. Apart from medical uses, this can be helpful in that way.

And they were using aquata breathers, so it's not like they held their breath for that long.
 
If only this technology could be tweaked in a way that it automatically renews in the system, then some degree of underwater exploration and deep space exploration could be achieved without the worry about running out of air supply.
 
this is great news to me. my gf often has problems breathing due to her medical disorder. shes gone to the hospital multiple times becasue of it. with further research this may relieve much of her discomfort
