For years, a vaccine to Hepatitis C (an STD that is both all too nasty and all too common) has eluded scientists; many believed that such a thing was impossible.

A University of Alberta researcher and Canada Excellence Research Chair in Virology has made the discovery of a vaccine that will potentially help combat hepatitis C... Currently, there are no vaccines against the disease available.

[Micheal] Houghton, also the Li Ka Shing Chair in Virology at the University of Alberta, says the vaccine, developed from a single strain, has shown to be effective against all known strains of the virus. It took more than 10 years to develop and started while he was working for the drug company Novartis. Following previous vaccine tests funded by the National Institutes of Health that yielded promising results, he said there remained two critical questions.

While the article does go on to mention that there a lot more testing has to be done, and that it could take 5 to 7 years before it is approved, this is still an encouraging step forward. One day, when people are sleeping together, they'll be able to sleep a little easier without the threat of hepatitis C on their minds.

Yes, because a vaccine preventing hepatitis C would cause a massive swell in the global population. Oh wait, that's completely and utterly wrong. In fact, vaccinating against hepatitis C would save us a good amount of money (since, you know, the costs of treating it and the damage it does to the liver is pretty expensive).

Awesome news- Hepatitis is a markedly unpleasant disease. Wonder if better treatments will be available down the line as well (I assume we using the "vaccines prevent and curing is the job of something else" definition).

Zetta I actually like your logic, it could be said though in theory that scientists around the world may have already cured alot of diseases that are fatal to us but are holding off on releasing them for that reason, that erradicating disease would not be adventageous to us as a species in the long run, and these "vaccines" slowly get released to us at a time when they are such needed, i.e. plagues or mass infection.
Its not an illogical thought

Sorry for the off-topic here a bit: Overpopulation is somewhat a problem in the so-called developing countries. It's quite the opposite in western countries and the likes where highly educated people tend to have no children or only one, compared to the culture of many children that is quite natural in the developing countries (and was also present before in the western countries).In the end the population will have to decline, be it disease, famine, war, etc (sorry for the negatives, but looking at how things have gone in the past, those are pretty much possible (and already somewhat reality)).

On-topic: Interesting that they've finally made some kind of break through. On the other hand, it's quite sad that Hepatitis C is still present all around the world regardless of protection campaigns and the likes..

The quantity is not the problem, it's the rate of production. While the larger the quantity, the bigger the rate, but I'm not planning on intentionally reproducing.

Myth: Hep C is soley an STD
FACT: WRONG, Hep C can be aquired through the exchange of blood, seman, urine, saliva and in extreme cases, even sweat. Sexual contact is NOT necc. to get it. Many people are carriers of the disease with no symptoms themselves.
MYTH: Hep C is acquired through the use of needles among iV drug users.
FACT: although it can be acquired that way, it can be acquired through infected blood, saliva etc (any body fluid) touching the mouth or any open orafic (even from a drinking glass or sharing a cigarette.
FACT: there are many doctors still i the dark to how this disease is spread.

Look around you, if the other 9 people are tested healthy, it could be YOU.

FACT 1 in every 5 US Veterans have Hep C.
FACT Most people who HAVE Hepititus will have it for years before they establish visually outward symptoms and because of that they are unsure where they got it from.

FACT Hep C can be brought on through the (abuse) of certain medications. it is NOT only a virus from outside the body but also one that can be triggered from within, while dormant through heavy drug and alcohol use. The nose carries the heaviest population of the virus in the carier.
