I have a Wii on the latest firmware update, and it has a WiiKey in it.

One day the WiiKey stopped reading burned discs, and everything shows up as there's no disc to read. What could be the problem? It was working fine no problem, and I have a ton of games that are burned and just sitting here. Anything I can do?

Also, what are the best modchips/methods of modding the Wii so I can play my games? Any help at all is soooo appreciated.

Also, I'm trying to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii and it asks to update, is it safe to update the Wii so I can play the game, and then still have it modded later?

Updating to the latest System Menu (it's not even close to firmware btw, I wish people would stop calling it that) blocked your ability to play region free.
  1. Are your games in region?
  2. Do retail discs work?

I didn't update anything. I'm wondering if I update to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if I can mod the Wii again afterwards to play the games I have on backup.

What's confusing about that? It was already on the latest firmware 4.3U (according to Nintendo's site that's the latest) and the WiiKey worked.

So if I put in NSMBWii and the disc asks me to update, am I able to get the Wiikey working again?

Okay, so I was right. You updated to 4.3 (the System Menu, NOT firmware) so region free is broken. Since you already screwed yourself by updating to 4.3, updating to 4.3b won't make you any worse off.

Oh my god, okay I'm going to make this reeeal simple for you to understand:

The Wii is on 4.3U like it has always been.
The WiiKey worked and all regioned discs I own and burned discs worked perfectly fine.
I brought the Wii over to my friends house and played it.
Brought it home, and now it doesn't play burned games.
It has not been updated at all ever since I got it.

And now I borrowed my friends Mario game, an official disc. I put that in and it asks for a Wii System Update. Am I able to update and play the game, and still try and fix the WiiKey?

I told you yes.

Okay. So for clarification (for me), updating the updates from discs does not goof up the Mod chip? And even if it does, would I be able to mod the Wii again?
4.2/4.3 screws up mods, but 4.3b shouldn't be an issue since you are already at 4.3.

Btw, do you have a softmod?

No. I don't know a thing about modding a Wii. It just has a WiiKey in it. I don't know why the WiiKey suddenly stopped working, the only thing I can think of is something came loose. By the way, what are other methods of playing burned backups? My friend has a Drive Key, is that any good?

I really don't know that much about modchips, but I love my softmod.

Something coming loose would explain your backups not working.

If wiikey is broken, if you inserted a disc in the drive, you cant eject it anymore, since the WiiKey that bridges the Wii's MoBo and DVD Drive is broken, so there's no way to send eject command to DVD drive.

If it still ejects, then i highly suspect that either the DVD drive itself is broken or just the laser module is broken.

But seriously, I never used a modchip on the Wii before, since I consider it a pirate solution. So I cant say it that what I suggest will be helpful at all.

Discs eject no problem. Though I noticed when I put in New Super Mario Bros, sometimes it doesn't show up in the menu and I have to reinsert it.

it's a bad laser then?

since you said it by yourself that your Wii is not soft modded at all and you also said that you didnt update your WIi, it just happen suddenly., so I doubt that anything that be software side will be causing it.

Seems pretty obvious to me. Your friend stole your modded Wii and replaced it with his boring old non modded one.

Solution : Get better friends :-)

Oh come on. I'm in Alberta. You're in BC. I know exactly what happened. You got together with your friend. Took part in a little BC Herb and while you were staring at pretty colors in the air your friend swapped Wii's. :-)

Except unlike people in Alberta, us B.C Folk know how to handle our weed so we're not pussies, and it's called BC Bud.

Well assuming you have a Wiikey version 1 (ye olde modchip'e') you must have had it in for a long time so chances are the laser has given out. Your best bet is to softmod your Wii and grab your self a hdd (or a large sd card) and play your game with that.
