Hey gang, I've been wondering if there's any good games out there for the DS that are in the same mold as Zelda i.e. the sorta overhead sword swinging, land exploring, item using, home invading sort of game. I can't think of any, but then again I'm a straight dope. Hell, if you even have a good gba recommendation, I'm all ears.

Note, if it's nothing like zelda but you think you should recommend it based on its fantasy setting or leveling up style or whatever, you're wrong. I'm not looking for a side-scroller, I'm not looking for a straight RPG, I'm not looking for a "strategy" type game. I want a fun old-school "Adventure" game.

(thinking back on it, there's not really ever been a large amount of competition in this niche, has there?)

I was going to make some smarmy response to you guys' suggestions, but the ones that ironically AREN'T linked in the replies all look like they might be good. I had no idea that Zenonia was available on the DS. I've got it on my phone, but have barely played it because the touch screen controls are ass. Actually using the d-pad and buttons will probably drastically change the play quality.

Edit: Aw crap, Zenonia is DSi ware only, isn't it? Shoot, I don't even HAVE a DSi...

let me guess...there's no translation patch whatsoever for Tsumuji?

There's certainly a handful of good suggestions here (I'd say about 50/50) for me to try out at least. Shame about Zenonia. Maybe I'll try it on my iphone again. I only have a 3G so that might explain why the dpad works so poorly.

nope... the game is pretty much unkown right now. Maybe someday someone make one, but I dont see that happening in the near future.

At least you could try the others suggestions.... Try Avalon Code, it's really good! :yaynds:

I recently rediscovered Secret Of Mana for the Snes ( currently playing it on my PSP via Snes emulator ) and it's surprisingly addictive.
Yes it's more like a classic RPG, but you actually have to swing your weapons manually and decide whether to engage or not in combat, as all the enemies are on screen ( no random, turn based battles ) and the top down overview and graphics reminds me of Zelda for the Snes.
I'm a little scared because I've read that it could take over 50 hours to finish SoM, and frankly I might give up, 'cause sadly I don't have that much time to sit trough a single game, but I'm like 8 hours in and I can't get myself to quit !

I'd say Secret of Mana can take about 20 hours of play, but it can take far more when you don't know what you're doing, and it's really easy to get lost in some areas.

If you liked it though, you should try Seiken Densetsu 3, with its English translation patch, it's a "sequel" to Secret of Mana.

Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga? Has items and that sort of stuff?
http://en.wikipedia...._Superstar_Saga
Almost nothing like Zelda. With the exception of needing a Hammer, or one of two physical moves. If you compare THAt aspect of the game to Zelda, then its like saying its like a Zelda game if Link only could get 1-2 more items other than sword.
Then there are things like being an RPG, and overall pacing of the game (as well as lack of puzzels).

Great suggestion for a great game, but terrible suggestion for a Zelda-like game.

With the exception of Okamiden, Tsumuji, and Away Shuffle Dungeon, many aren't really getting the "Zelda-like" component of the game(s) request.

Zelda means Puzzles. Zelda means thinking, Zelda means good, and people are either suggesting great games that are very un-zelda-like, or zelda-like games that aren't good/worth the time.

1st to point out that Mario and Luigi, Avalon Code, Kingdom Hearts, Tales of Innocense, or any other RPG/Action RPGs on page 1 are JUST RPGs. They often have no puzzles. Just battle and go to the next room/find exit. Thats not to say that they aren't great to play, they're just terrible suggestions for anyone wanting to seek Zelda-like gameplay.

Games that are acceptable to call Zelda-likes:

Golden Sun Dark Dawn, while classified as RPG, the psynergy you learn throughout the game are incorporated into out-side-battle gameplay where they are used to solve puzzles to get to the next room or uncover a secret/item/etc... Unlike other RPG's like Tales or Chrono Trigger, where all you're doing is just exploring areas trying to find the next room with almost no thinking. Golden Sun is one of the best examples when it comes puzzle solving that requires (x) item to solve (y) context puzzle.

Okamiden, easily my Top 5 games, is like Zelda without the touch controls. Brush Skills you learn are used to get past/solve obstacles that obstruct your path. Unlike Golden Sun, there is only minor backtracking.

Final Fantasy Rings/Echoes, which is kind of stretching it. While it does require some thinking/puzzle work in every room you go into, theres none of that bzns where you got to get a dungeon's item to progress. From start to finish, you already have most of what you need to progress through any dungeon. If a room requires you to use thunder on one item and Blizzard on the other, no big deal, you already have those items when you started.

Tsumuji - Its a clone in Japanese. I mean you can still play it blindly if you wanted to. If story is not priority.

Away Shuffle Dungeon not quite zelda-like the others, but still a good way to kill time.

Dungeon Raiders, just not worth playing, even for free.

Games that have been suggested but totally miss "zelda" feel:

Ninja Gaiden - I mean come on, really?
Dragon Quest IX - Just another RPG
Chrono Trigger - Just another RPG
Mario and Luigi - -__-
Secret of Mana - Just another RPG thats not even on DS (GBA)
Kingdom Hearts - Action RPG, but totally not Zelda-like
Tales of - Action RPG, but totally not Zelda-like
Avalon Code - Action RPG, but totally not Zelda-like
Avatar - -_____-
Lunar Knights - Action RP- you get the idea.
Lufia - Action RP- you still get the idea.
Dragon Ball - Same general control scheme as DS Zeldas, without almost zero of the puzzles/thinking.
Grand Theft Auto - .......

Oh.

Then, uh...

What about Chibi Robo: Park Patrol? I know it's not EXACTLY the same, and there aren't technically any levels and it's about growing flowers instead of progressing, but...

And on that same note, Okaeri! Chibi Robo: Happy Richie Osouji may qualify, too.

Another great game suggestion, easily top 100 in the DS library, still very un-zelda like.

Theres no dungeons or puzzle rooms to solve. The items you do get aren't necessary. They're just aids to help you get your voltage up, or traverse more ground. And the Misc items just make others happy. Teres only a slight hint of a story, but most of the game s just busy work/planting flowers. Very un-zelda-like. Although how cool was that RC Car and Windmill?

Okaeri Chibi Robo, however, is a different story. It's more like the original Chibi Robo, which is similar to Zelda except you clean things. Instead of dungeons, you get an entire house. There's not much in the way of puzzles except for the gambling thing, but getting the items you need to progress can be considered a puzzle.

Sure, one goal is to raise your rank so you can get more upgrades from Citrusoft, but the main goal is to turn the house beautiful. To clean it up and change it from the run down, crackhouse-looking place it is at the beginning of the game.

There aren't any bosses, really, but there are enemies around. Mainly rats and dirt ghosts, but still...
