review of the X360dock

Thanks to:
Erick from the X360dock team for the review sample

The X360dock is a Optical Drive Emulator (ODE) for the Xbox 360. It allows you to launch games straight from your computer (soon only HDD) without any soldering, JTAG, RGH, etc. It supports all Phat, and most Slim consoles.

Features:
• User friendly, no soldering required
• Compatible with both Fat and Slim consoles
• Latest supported Xbox 360 version: 2.0.13604.0
• AP25 supported
• XGD3 supported
• Plug and Play/Requires DVD Key
• No need to flash or modify your original DVD drive
• USB 2.0 and fast load times
• Compatible with multi-disc games
• Full upgradeable by USB/JTAG, regular firmware updates available for free download
• Drive mode (allow playing games from the DVD drive in a 100% Xbox Live safe manner)
• Remote ISO selector by IOS/Android systems (Requires Wi-Fi)

Module 2 features (available in about a week, upgrade also available if you already own module 1)
• High speed ARM games management system
• Full Color 2'2" TFT Touchscreen
• Full Color touchscreen cover flow ISO/config selection system
• 3 ports USB 2.0 High Speed (480M/S) HUB embeded for USB HDD/Flash drive/etc.
• NTFS File system supported
• USB / SD upgrades for FPGA and Microcontroller system
• External SD socket (No needed disassembly if SD card replacement required)
• Full clean installation. Place the module 2 where ever you want.
• Easy installation, just plug USB cable from X360dock Module 1

Forthcoming features:
• Automatic extraction of the DVD key (Not sure if it can be done, but the DockTeam never gives up)
• Dumping of Xbox 360 ISO's from original discs

The X360dock comes in a nice package and contains the following items:
• X360dock motherboard
• SATA cable
• Power cable
• USB connector
• USB connector strip thingy
• X360dock sticker

Additionally, the X360dock will soon come packaged with a mini-USB cable, required for usage.

The X360dock installs with ease. Solderless, and fits in the 360 great. If you use a desktop computer in another room, you may want to wait for Module 2 of the X360dock, as currently you can only load from a PC, while Module 2 supports loading directly from a USB HDD.

Setting up the software is relatively easy. You can download it from the link at the end of this review. Please note that the X360dock requires you have your drive keys, so please consider this before buying. Anyway, assuming you have your drive keys, and your X360dock is connected to your PC, boot the game of your choice! Also note that currently the X360dock does not support Xbox originals, however I've heard from the team that support will be added soon. Please note that Xbox LIVE use is not confirmed safe, use online at your own risk!

Compatibility is practically perfect, with every 360 game I (and Devin) tried working fine. Here's the list:

All of the following work:

Modern Warfare 3
Skyrim
Halo Reach
Rock Band 3
DR2: Off the Record
El Shaddai
Deus Ex: HR
Driver SF
Black Ops
RAGE
Battlefield 3
Gears of War 3

Tested by Devin:
Dead Island
Driver: San Francisco
Sonic Generations
Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi
Batman: Arkham City
X-Men: Destiny
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record
Battlefield 3
Rise of Nightmares
Gears of War 3
Halo 3
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Catherine
Alice: Madness Returns

Overall, the X360dock is an excellent product and a great alternative to the more expensive x360key and Wasabi 360. I recommend this product to anyone looking for a USB loader solution for there Xbox 360.

As a first feedback , why did they not make it fit the HDD Slot ? A few cm smaller and it would have fitted . Great for some slim 4gb users .

I've setup the X360Dock , trying to run Grand Slam Tennis 2 , i executed Open with Reboot , but the game does not show up , i just get a " Play DVD "
on the screen , with no preview of the game . I have a slim with a Liteon 0401 drive . Seems there are problems with loading on slims . Look what the user guide says

Slim 0225 Mode
This model includes extra checks which we're fixing right now, meanwhile we fix these
checks use the next method to boot your ISO:
 Power on Xbox360, when “Xbox Dashboard” appear, plug the miniUSB cable in
your computer,.
 Execute the PC software, click “Open ISO”, then select a game (do not use AP25
ISO for the first boot), click “Drive Mode”
 Reboot Xbox360, we recommend using your controller (press “guide” button for a
few seconds, then select “Turn Off Console”. After the Xbox360 is turn off, press
“guide” button for a few seconds, the Xbox360 will be power on ).
 When “Xbox Dashboard” appear, press the eject button on the front of the console,
execute the PC software, then the tray will be autoclosed.
 Click “Open ISO”, select a ISO, press A button on your controller to “Close Tray”.
At this point X360dock will load the selected ISO and after a few seconds the Xbox
360 will show that game as inserted in the same way it would with original game disc.
If after some retries (eject/insert) it continues in PLAYDVD prompt, set drive mode in
x360dock's software (xbox360 ON) and retry the method rebooting.

That's a lot of extra steps comparing to how easy it should be . Any advice to make this an easier task ?
