Today, I downloaded a custom save with different songs for the game, as I have been looking into importing and editing the save but...

Whenever I start the game, the save is ignored and starts again (asks my name, location, tutorial song etc)

I am using a M3 DS real with Sakura

The same thing is happening with the japanese variant too

Any ideas?

Please check to make sure these are correct:
  1. The filename of the save is the same as the filename of the ROM.
  2. The save extension is the one your flash card uses.
  3. You have downloaded a save with the correct file size (check here and redownload if you need to)
If these happen to be correct and it still is not working, please try the following steps:
  1. Create a new save for the game and go through the entire start-up spiel.
  2. Download the BDX Mega Pack and BDXTool * or the Degausser **. BDXTool is here and the Degausser is here.
  3. Open the save file you created in whatever program you chose and import songs.
  4. When you are finished, save the file. It is recommended you save to a new file instead of overwriting the file you have, in case you want a second save file for more songs later and don't want to take the time to delete and replace songs.
*BDXTool is much easier to use than the Degausser, but cannot add as many songs to the game. If you are using BDXTool with Jam with the Band, please remember that only the first 50 added songs will be recognized. Everything after 50 will be ignored. Also note that downloading this program requires a couple of extra steps to be taken.

** The Degausser is able to add more songs to the game, but is complicated to use. Please look at the link I have posted for the Degausser, as many users will have to follow the steps on that page because it does not accept save files over 8MB.

Once you get used to Degausser, trust me you'll never want to go back to BDXTool.
Some flashcarts even give a 8MB save file to JwtB by default.

I've tried the Degausser and it was a huge mess. I couldn't delete any songs if I added the wrong one, I couldn't BROWSE instead of see a giant list of songs... It was horrible! I mean, the ability to see who's made the song, if it has karaoke, and what the in-game name of the song is is nice, but it was a big huge mess and I didn't like it at all! I could never get used to a program with such a bad construction!

I found out my card was making a 32 mb save, so after importing songs with it using BDXTOOL and running it, it can't find any of the songs, is there a specific menu I have to go to for the custom songs?

I went to the export songs open and the list is empty, dos this mean that the save edit diddn't work?

Export means you're taking songs out of the save file.

If you added songs and they're not in-game, then you may have added AFTER slot fifty.
Try adding to slots 1-50. If that doesn't work, your game is bugged.

Yes, but if I allready have songs, then there would be songs in the list, I was just checking and not going to export them

I also added the songs and filled up all the first 50 slots, so yea, it does sound like my game/flashcard is screwed up

as far as i know m3real's saves are incompatible with all JWTB save editors.
i tried it some time ago so i could transfer custom songs to the original game, but i ended up buying an R4 to transfer the songs.

m3real can save/load custom songs, the issue is just that none of the import tools write the songs in a way the m3real can read.

Right, so I have to get a new flashcard then... OK, well I was thinking about the new M3 that can work on a DSi/3DS but I have no idea if it would have the same problem. One of my friend has the new R4 so I'm gonna have a look

I might get a Supercard Two whenever I get some monies :)

the "new" m3 won't do you any good.
it's compatibility is exactly the same as that of the m3real, and it's not being updated anymore so if you keep your DSi up-to-date it won't work at all.
