Looks like everybody and their grandmother's having this issue, and I can't update the iPad I'm using yet because of it. It looks like an error with doing a checksum check with apple's servers, somebody suggested downloading the IPSW file itself and making iTunes use that... but it's 700MB so I'm still downloading it...

I don't know why, I woke up early (it's 5.34am and I'm supposed to wake up at 6.10) to update to iOS 5 but it still shows latest firmware as iOS 4.3.5

My iTunes is on the latest iTunes 10.5

Im going to upload and post links to the firmware so that you guys don't have to use the apple shit servers or felixbrun's overloaded servers.
That isn't the issue....
If the issue is what I think it is, then it won't help.

Since I think the issue is that Apple's signing server is getting hammered with signature check requests, and even if you download the IPSW file from other sources, iTunes still phones home to Apple's SHSH hash checking server, and the issue will still be there.

But, I'm not positive if that's the issue, so I'd just suggest keep trying. Or, wait until tomorrow when most people have updated and signature requests will be not as high in volume.

1st be sure to update your iTunes to 10.5.x

Been busy for 3 hours now iPad 1 gives error 3200, been trying on 3 different computers with 3 different OSses on it using different cables, everytime the same error.

Reinstalling iOS 4.3.5 goes without a problem, The iPad is now in like you start it up for the first time, clean no installed apps, nada updating to iOS 5.0 results in error 3200
Rebooted the iPad several times (turning off, keep it off for a few minutes and restart, etc... Making a backup is also gone wrong, the recovery backup was a clean backup without apps or settings or other stuff in it (yeah i lost all notes/docs, etc...) Been using a downloaded ipsw or download throu iTunes, doesn't matter error stays. So in the end i'm back to a clean fresh iOS 4.3.5

I have like 4 other iOS devices to go for the update, i won't do them untill i get this iPad right, i can't affort to lose more data

What I've read indicates it's just a checksum check, not a signature check, and it's done if the download is done through iTunes, but if the file is given to it another way it just skips the checksum check since it likely assumes that if you know enough to be feeding it a firmware file specifically, you're doing some testing or something anyways.

Good old Checksum errors.... screwing over Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android users since god knows when.

Eh, not bashing on Apple here, nothings immune from this issue. I've observed it happen in Arch Linux from time to time when the Checksums for the AUR packages don't match up with the source checksum. Happens to a certain extent to in Ubuntu, and I have had it happen in Windows (When I used to use it on a daily basis), and Mac OSX during an update, which luckily didn't bork anything up.

Never mind the download links then. If its a check with itunes to the apple servers then just turn off the internet on your phone and computer. It should work after that, I had to do that to downgrade an iPod touch.
Currently, you cannot upgrade iOS versions on current devices. Since unless you have the SHSH blobs obviously. Since on all current devices, the bootROM checks the SHSH. And iTunes won't restore without checking with Apple. :P

Whoehoe, it works :D (after 3+ hours of messing around)

- I put the iPad in DFU mode with iREB (didn't work) same error
- Removed Apple cable from iPad 1, kept iTunes open
- from DFU mode i pressed HOME + POWER till you see the iTunes logo with USB cable screen
- connected the cable to the iPad and just pressed the onscreen instructions from iTunes

Try what i did to solve my error 3200, who knows it works for error 3004 (be sure to make a backup of your iPod in iTunes before you try)
I didn't have to do anything to fix the issue. Just unplugged and replugged and it fixed itself. It's updated now~

holy shit that was scary.

i kept getting the same errors too so i just waited. then on my last tried it just shut down. itunes said my phone was on recovery mode and needed to be restored. so i restored it and it restored it to factory settings and i was like "but my pictures and stuff" - then it went into restoring backup info and now everything is back to normal and i have iOS 5.

so i guess my advice is to semi-brick it?

anyway, first thing that i noticed is that the iPod app got split into a Music app and a Videos app. it's so generic, it's disturbing. i kinda liked my videos etc under one app... i mean, now music videos go in videos? but they are music!
