REGTA
, a project bringing GTA III, Vice City and Liberty City Stories together on New Nintendo 3DS.

It builds on re3/reVC, the existing community 3DS port, and reStories/reLCS. I've been working on the dual-screen interface, controls, loading performance and the rendering and mission bugs I encountered while playing on real hardware.

Trailer

What's new?

  • A large live map and game-themed HUD on the bottom screen.
  • Touch controls for L3, R3 and camera movement.
  • Nintendo-style controls and prompts, including A to confirm and B to return in menus and shops.
  • A text cheat keyboard, opened with L + R + ZL + ZR during gameplay.
  • Faster loading and improved streaming, memory use and audio playback.
  • Fixes for broken character models, vehicle colours, windows, decals and water rendering.
  • Lightweight vehicle reflections in LCS.
  • Full mission names in the save list.
  • Custom animated HOME Menu banners for all three games.

GTA III: Removed the motion-blur trails, toned down overly bright vehicle highlights, and fixed several rendering problems and crashes. Loading, streaming and audio have also received improvements.

Vice City: Improved animation loading, restored particle transparency, fixed character and vehicle rendering, and smoothed the transitions between the three water detail levels.

Liberty City Stories: This started from the unfinished reStories/reLCS implementation. A lot of the work went into getting missions, cutscenes, saves and world changes working correctly on 3DS.

I've completed the LCS main story from beginning to end on a physical New Nintendo 3DS. That includes the island unlocks and the final mission. Side missions and other optional activities have not yet been verified, so please don't take this as a claim of fully tested 100% completion.

Performance still varies by scene. Busy areas and demanding cutscenes can cause frame drops or audio stutter.

Requirements

  • New Nintendo 3DS, New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL. Old 3DS/2DS models are not supported.
  • Your own PC game data for GTA III and Vice City, or PS2 data for LCS, prepared with the converter linked in the README.
  • You must build the executables yourself. The repository includes instructions for both 3DSX and CIA builds.
The repository contains selected runtime overrides and finished HOME Menu artwork, not the full games. You still need to provide the original game data. The required devkitARM r55 toolchain must also be installed separately.

All three games are in the same repository. The main README covers setup, building and the detailed changelog; each game also has its own README.

Bug reports

Please open an Issue if you run into a problem. Include the game and build, console model, mission or location, and steps to reproduce it. Screenshots or video are helpful, as is a crash dump if one was generated. A save from just before the problem can also help.

Please mention any mods or cheats used, and whether the issue happens immediately or only after playing for a long time.

Credits

Thanks to the re3/reVC contributors, the original community Nintendo 3DS port developers, and knackers4 and the reStories contributors, whose work provided the foundation for LCS and its PS2 asset converter. Thanks also to the developers behind librw, devkitPro, libctru, Citro3D and the audio libraries used by these ports.
