How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

Considering this weirdo is openly admitting to intentionally derailing the topic can the mods do something about it? The mods who run the site felt the actual topic (coverage of releases) needed discussing, why is this nonsense allowed?
He also said my mom should've ignored her cancer. Level 1 user is clearly just here to shitpost and troll.

you asked I answered. what did you expect?

anti ai haters don't deserve any ounce of respect or credibility or transparency.

I will say it’s very clear who in this thread has ever engaged actual development and OSS vs those who could never dream of it

I am not interested in development but i do worry about the well-being of actual developers. when they are being forced to disclose AI. They will become punching bags.

What the fuck does that even mean???????
reflect on human nature and patterns of human behavior then you'll know.

advocates of witch hunts are the ones who laugh at these comments.

alright im going to make one single attempt to teach you fucking anything:

AI models are trained on sets of data. Those sets of data were attained without concern for licenses or ownership. When an AI model regurgitates the code they took from another developer you are given zero context for that. Meaning you as the developer are not physically capable of crediting the original nor are you capable of honoring the licensing agreement of that software. This is immoral and tantamount to plagiarism is undisclosed. Nobody is advocating for harassing anybody and it’s fucking weird that this is where your mind goes when people suggest disclosing usage of the plagiarism bots.

Beyond any of that, it has nothing to do with what the topic of the thread is. The actual topic is “Should GBATemp care about the use of AI in a project when reporting the release of them.” To that topic almost the entire thread agrees actually if you could pull your head out of your ass for 5 seconds.

That isn’t even kind of the same thing and I think you probably know that. We aren’t talking about being inspired by the brush strokes of Starry Nights, we are talking about taking code from another person exactly as they wrote it without crediting them for it. You can’t take a moral high ground while ignoring that aspect of AI use.

You are upset at something that doesn't matter. nothing is new under the sun anymore. why you grind on this so hard bruh? this side of the issue isn't worth your time and I am not saying you should defend AI either. I dont give a fuck if you do or dont my point is is that AI disclosure tags will lead into people abusing it the immature you call me clinically insane? alright well, would you be upset if a developer working on a cool project received a death threat from an anti AI hater and they actually finally followed through?

the legitimate concern is the AI tag itself

You are literally the only one upset. I’m trying to get things back on track while you melt down in public. Literally nobody is suggesting dearth threats and it’s genuinely concerning that’s what you hear when someone suggests accountability and license compliance.

I am aware that no one present is suggesting death threats you are willfully being ignorant of my concern. my worry is about those who are anti AI who do do this sort of thing.

what I want to see is no AI disclosure because that allows the devs to be able to work in peace.

your “worry” is fake hypotheticals that you created based on what echoes AI psychosis itself. Get away from the computer.

so, AI usage causes insane amount of toxicity on social media as we are seeing right now like in this thread. now, maybe you don't use twitter which i dont either anymore and thank god I dont. so, if you dont use twitter god bless you because you're better off without it. however, I have seen people in the anti space say toxic things like people who use AI should die I have heard them send death threats to developers when your in the cycle long enough eventually you hear about the worst that people are capable of doing but people who are on this side will constantly deny it because they want to believe I am the good guy. I am just trying to get maybe not you to understand but "PEOPLE" who are reading to understand the negative precedent that AI disclosure will have on devs. you may deny that death threads dont happen alkl you like. its good for optics. but it certainly has happened. now, I hope that with that said people understand my concern whether you are anti ai or not. sending death threats to devs is not ok just because you are against Ai. I am not saying everyone who hates AI will do that. but some people in this camp will. thats the problem and denying it only poisens the well. you deny it because you want that AI disclosure tag.

I apologise for not having a better video that elaborates more would take up too much time to look for and I dont have all day

the fact that I am the only one bringing this is up is not reason to dismiss my concern in fact it is good and smart of me to do so when everyone is not.

I will reiterate because people can be toxic awful human beings to each other over dumb issues like ai is the reason why I say we dont deserve an AI disclosure tag.

You’re just ignoring the points that I’ve made. If you are using AI and not disclosing it you are committing what amounts to plagiarism. That’s why people get upset when you fail to disclose it. In the exact same way people get upset when you STEAL OTHER PEOPLES’ WORK. But NONE of this is the point of this thread. The point of this thread is whether the Temp should care about AI use when reporting releases, not any other thing. If you think completely ignoring all reasonable conversation and derailing a thread is an effective way to express AI as a technology worth using then I have bad news.

we shouldnt be this heated over a FUCKING MACHINE! YET THIS IS WHERE WE ARE AND WHAT WE"RE FIGHTING ABOUT IN 2026!

AI cannot steal because AI is not a human. only humans can steal. an AI doesn't know what stealing is.

theft belongs to humans.

We are taking about plagiarism. Integrity is worth defending for the people who have it. You cannot say “some people aren’t nice therefore nobody should be accountable” and be taken seriously.

also there is a law that works created by AI cannot be copyrighted in order to prevent the obvious incoming wave of copyright infringement lawsuits that the courts knew would occur. saving them the head ache of all those court cases.
