Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition gets an even more definitive Switch 2 Edition, features 4K/60 docked performance

After datamines revealed code for 60fps in the original Switch release of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, fans have patiently waited for a Switch 2 update to come along and unlock what we assumed the game was already capable of. Both announced and released today, the new Switch 2 Edition gives us this and a touch more, bumping the resolution up to 4K when docked and 1080p for handheld play.

The best things in life are however not free, and this update is no exception. Coming in at £4.19 in the UK and $4.99 in the US it won't be breaking the bank, but with the update purely bumping the resolution and framerate, it is a shame it couldn't be free. The Switch 2 Edition will also be seeing a physical release, with it slated to hit stores on the 16th of April, where you can expect to find the base Switch game and Switch 2 Edition upgrade together on one cartridge.

On one hand, I am glad to see that refreshes are no longer charging full price for re-release on new hardware, but charging $5 for higher resolution? Really? Does this at least include higher definition assets?

Resolution switching and HRR is a standard feature in PC gaming by the way. They're literally charging $5 for higher graphics settings

That's nice and all, but Nintendo needs to make new games and stop porting games that have literally been ported to basically every system since their release. I can only play so much of Donkey Kong Country Returns and Xenoblade. That goes for Sony as well. We didn't need PS5 ports of PS4 games that still look amazing.

To be fair on that one, how many games do you expect from them a year? Last year the Switch 2 got Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Kirby Air Riders. Admittedly only two of those were developed by Nintendo (the other two were published, not sure how involved they are with those, but if anybody has insight I would be interested), but they are pretty hefty games in themselves that I imagine took years to create.

I'm personally all for ports and lower effort enhancements to already good game to just keep a steady stream of content on a new console without expecting a development studio to work 100 hour weeks lol.

Nothing's wrong with ports, it's just that every time they release a new system, you can count on them porting games from the sytem before. My main problem is that they charge full price for a game you can get on older systems for about half the price. Like I said about Sony, we didn't need a port of Days Gone for PS5. They basically charged full-price for it when you can get the PS4 version of the game, which still looks amazing, for about $20. At least leave a 1 or 2-generation gap.

Also the switch 2 released, what like 8 months ago? I don't expect them to come out with 100 games in less than a year.

It's funny because 50% of the comments I see on Switch 2 is people asking for Switch 1 game upgrades. Though unlike the jump from PS4 to PS5 the jump from Switch 1 to Switch 2 can be rather massive with these games.

and unlock what we assumed the game was already capable of
And that's just it. People assumed the game was designed around being able to run at 60fps because a dataminer found "something" that could lead in that direction. But no modder ever got it working, did they? Not even with overclocking? For all we know, it was meant for something small, not for the entire game. And unless I was missing something when I purchased the upgrade pack, while the pack is around 3MB, I was still downloading around 1.5GB of data, so from my perspective, there was certainly more to this than just flipping on a "switch" to active 60fps.

So the way I see it, there was quite a bit of work to make this upgrade, hence why there is a price attached to it.

You’re very wrong about this. 60fps was fully modded into the game in about a week. By the same person who found that code snippet in the first place, by the way.
