Considering how relatively cheap the DSpico is, and how relatively obsessed with retro consoles we are, I think the DSpico is what you should be looking at. It'll play DSi content off the cart.

I couldn't find any information about the battery's purpose anywhere. I measured the voltage, and it was 1V, but everything seemed to be working, including RTS and slowdown.

It's a supercapacitory battery meant for powering the PSRAM to hold a save. Although, the size is slightly larger than the ones from the N-Card.

My DSpico from ChisCart already has the firmware pre-flashed which will work with retail consoles (not just stuck to modded consoles). I suggest you get one from there, because of how better the build quality is all around. If you buy the flashcart from any other seller that isn't ChisCart, such as WoodBeyond, then you need to compile the firmware and program the cart yourself, not to mention the quality is mixed.

Correct. The USB port is for programming.

DSpico is back in stock on the Chis Family Store in Aliexpress. And someone else is selling a version with a USB C port on it, but it costs almost twice as much. Looking forward to getting it, basically means I don't need cfw at all for my DSi if I only want cfw to play DSi enhanced games.

The USB mini port variant is about the same, only difference is the USB-C port (which seems fairly common because everybody has so many of these cables around). It's worth sticking to the USB mini one if you want to save a fair bit of money.
