New Final Fantasy Adventure romhack "Embers of Mana" will bring an unofficial sequel to the original game

Romhacking has many facets, from character and palettes swaps, to technical showcases, improvements and quality of life features, and even some that go above and beyond, by implementing all of these previous instances into brand-new original stories and games.

Such is the case of an upcoming romhack of Final Fantasy Adventure for the Game Boy, also known as Mystic Quest in Europe, with romhacker @Ok_Impala, who has previously worked on other original story romhacks like Zelda II - Amida's Curse and Super Mario Kart - Epic Racers, bringing a whole new original story hack for FFA, which will be an unofficial romhacking sequel to the original game, with the title of "Embers of Mana".

Embers of Mana is a brand-new adventure in the Mana series, designed for the Game Boy. In 1991, Squaresoft released the first game in the series, Seiken Densetsu, known as Final Fantasy Adventure in the U.S. and Mystic Quest in Europe.

Now, in 2026, Ok Impala! presents a faithful homage: a total conversion ROM hack built using the original game’s engine. Crafted over four years, Embers of Mana captures the spirit of 1991, when small, passionate teams created timeless handheld adventures. It delivers a fresh experience that feels authentic to the era—simple, immersive, and full of wonder.Ok Impala! is the creator of Zelda II – Amida’s Curse and Super Mario Kart – Epic Racers. Embers of Mana marks his third major ROM hack, and a loving tribute to the golden age of Game Boy gaming.Embers of Mana will release in Q1 2026.

The original design choice to let the player "save anywhere" could cause all kinds of softlocks like this. Because of this, and some other reasons, I decided to give Embers of Mana fixed save points. And no worries, there are plenty of them. ^_^
I vaguely remember that, in some castle underground area, you could lock yourself if you used the last key and saved, but the monsters there would rarely drop a chest with keys.
or was that in the 3d remake?

I can confirm you're remembering correctly. How could I possibly know? I remember that day.

FF Adventure is one of my childhood favs. Here's my copy from 1992. Bought from some gaming magazine. It shipped from Sweden and they included a couple of printed papers with swedish language. I kept those too.View attachment 553055View attachment 553054View attachment 553053
They actually send you the Dutch version of the game! I think they added that Swedish paper as a custom translation for the Dutch text in the booklet. The game itself is in English and the same as the UK version. The cartridge does have it's own coding, though. See that code on the left ending with "HOL", that's "HOL" for Holland. I have this same version at home (I'm from the Netherlands).

Yeah, I know. I'm norwegian so I'm sure they sent the game straight from Bergsala in Sweden. Maybe they used to ship games with these custom translations because I got one with FIFA 96 on gameboy as well. It says "Nintendoklubben". A quick google shows that was the swedish version of what was to be Club Nintendo. They used to "market and inform about upcoming games for Bergsala." So I must've ordered it from their magazine. Maybe.
