Banjo: Recompiled is a fan-made port of Banjo-Kazooie on PC

A surprise port has just dropped, courtesy of creator Wiseguy. Banjo: Recompiled is a project that takes the beloved Nintendo 64 classic game Banjo-Kazooie, and fully ports it to Windows, Linux, and Mac. The game can run at higher framerates, widescreen, adds in the note-saving feature from the Xbox 360 port, free camera controls, and support for two romhacks--Jiggies of Time and Nostalgia 64. Banjo: Recompiled is available over on GitHub, if you're interested in trying it out.

I think the fact they went out of their way to support ROMhacks as built-in mods right off the bat is the most impressive part.

Could you imagine if Zelda or Mario recomp ports did the same thing? It would be insane!
I've been playing so much BAZR recently. Would have loved to play on decomp

Woke up to this and was awake immediately!
The coolest part: The converter for existing rom hacks. Why don't all Decomp projects have this? That would be awesome!

Was hoping for the decompilation port but still happy we got this.
But it is?
It's a "recompilation" done of the "decompilation".

If this supports most Mario 64 ROMhacks out of the box I would explode.
Last time I checked I don't think this was the case.
I don't read anything about "rom hack" support there, only mods (which to me reads like mods specifically made for this port). So yeah, I agree with you.

That's what I thought.
Technically correct, but not quite what I meant in my initial post 😅

Haven't downloaded the PC Port yet, so I'm not sure if PAL is supported.
PAL version has extra languages to choose from.
I am pretty sure the decompilation project was solely based on the USA ROM, which explains why fan translations that used the decompilation to translate the game are based on that ROM.

Otherwise the Mario 64 port would be playable even in Japanese (without the enhancements found in the Shindou Edition, though).

I basically woke up to this yesterday, but was only able to install and tinker with it around the past hour or two.
Higher resolutions with higher framerate? Neat.
Analog Camera? Mmmhmm.
NOTE SAVING!? Surely you jest!
Mod support AND TWO ROM hacks already supported at launch(with more to come)?? Now you're spoiling me!

And of course, Steam Deck support. YES! It has native Linux support so it's expected to run beautifully....can confirm it does!
For the curious among you, on my OLED it runs at full 800p resolution with somewhat stable 90fps(it dips to the 80s here and there but it's hardly noticeable).
OH YEAH, and I totally recommend downloading the HD texture pack because a lot of the assets will remain low quality otherwise.

HOPE TOOIE IS NEXT!

Steam Deck for the win! I will also throw this on the Steam Machine later this year to play some of the mods.
Honestly, this feature alone (rom hack support) makes it the best decomp project yet.

If you want to take a similar approach without waiting, just play this docked.
I tried it after plugging my Steam Deck to my LCD TV display and it's just perfect.
No need to wait for a Steam Machine!

Yeah I do all the time. However I'm getting a Steam Machine for my living room TV anyway due to more horsepower. The fact that Steam Cloud Saves exist make it so convenient to continue played games on the Deck or Machine and vice versa. For non-Steam games like these decomps I manually have to setup auto syncing but that's fine. #pcmasterrace

how do I get PAL languages into the recompilation?

I downloaded the Linux flatpak version, and I like how it just works. Took like a minute to install and get everything up and running. Was super easy compared to Perfect Dark's PC port.

If none of these decomps had save states I’d assume it wasn’t possible, but SoH OoT does, and it works just fine. So why do none of the others? Both MM decomps, both MK64 decomps, Dinosaur Planet, Quest 64, Goemon 64, Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, none of them. Really disappointing.

Its a static recompilation. They didn't port the decomp. Seems they did reference the decomp to make things easier for adding in the QOL enhancements though (Just based on what they say at the bottom of the GitHub read me). I guess a modified recomp was less work than a full port of the decomp.
