New Final Fantasy Adventure romhack "Embers of Mana" will bring an unofficial sequel to the original game

Romhacking has many facets, from character and palettes swaps, to technical showcases, improvements and quality of life features, and even some that go above and beyond, by implementing all of these previous instances into brand-new original stories and games.

Such is the case of an upcoming romhack of Final Fantasy Adventure for the Game Boy, also known as Mystic Quest in Europe, with romhacker @Ok_Impala, who has previously worked on other original story romhacks like Zelda II - Amida's Curse and Super Mario Kart - Epic Racers, bringing a whole new original story hack for FFA, which will be an unofficial romhacking sequel to the original game, with the title of "Embers of Mana".

Embers of Mana is a brand-new adventure in the Mana series, designed for the Game Boy. In 1991, Squaresoft released the first game in the series, Seiken Densetsu, known as Final Fantasy Adventure in the U.S. and Mystic Quest in Europe.

Now, in 2026, Ok Impala! presents a faithful homage: a total conversion ROM hack built using the original game’s engine. Crafted over four years, Embers of Mana captures the spirit of 1991, when small, passionate teams created timeless handheld adventures. It delivers a fresh experience that feels authentic to the era—simple, immersive, and full of wonder.Ok Impala! is the creator of Zelda II – Amida’s Curse and Super Mario Kart – Epic Racers. Embers of Mana marks his third major ROM hack, and a loving tribute to the golden age of Game Boy gaming.Embers of Mana will release in Q1 2026.

Fantastic, I really liked this game!
Not important, but I wonder if the person who did the colorization hack will do it for this too.

(It would be very awkward if Square Enix's new mana game that they're working on is called "Embers of Mana" lol)
I read in the recent pokemon leaks that we don't have a flying type Eevee because there were just too many similar fakemon and drawings out there by fans

Thanks a lot for sharing

I've completed Mystic Quest a few years ago and I didn't plan for a gameboy game to stick with me that way. Sometimes I still hear the overworld OST in my head ... had to pull up a gamefaq walkthrough to finish it and even tho it was a breeze with it, I had a surprising amount of fun

Definitely going to play this one, especially if it's made by the guy who made Amida's Curse (still haven't finished it, but it's awesome)

I swear, I'm not trying to be that nerd, but I want to know which game you're referring to. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is on the SNES, but you mention a Game Boy game. Are you referring to Final Fantasy Legends? I'm curious because, if it's memorable, it has my interest.

I hope he also took care of the game breaking bug.
I was curious, so I tried to look up info on it. It's a shame, when the final version of a game has a game-breaking bug like this.

Mystic Quest on Game Boy was the name of Final Fantasy Adventure in Europe. It's the same game, but only with a different name. It surely doesn't help it's easily confused with Mystic Quest Legend (SNES).

it's a new game basically, so not really "taken care of", just hopefully not put in a position where you won't be able to get keys etc
I completely overhauled the key system. In Embers of Mana doors will stay permanently open once a key is used. As a result you won't be buying keys, but you find them in dungeons. The amount of keys matches the amount of closed doors in a dungeon. So, no chance for the softlocking.

FFA had some other code bugs, they are all fixed in Embers of Mana.

Hope we see a GBC DX edition as well 😁
A GBC DX version is being worked on, but that will take some time. Colorization is hard and time consuming.

My problem was that my item bag was already full when I defeated a boss, so I didn't get an important item that was crucial to the game. Unfortunately, when I re-entered the island, neither the boss nor the item were there anymore. Because I didn't have enough keys, I manipulated my game save file at one point, thats another story.

The original design choice to let the player "save anywhere" could cause all kinds of softlocks like this. Because of this, and some other reasons, I decided to give Embers of Mana fixed save points. And no worries, there are plenty of them. ^_^

It's just the European name for Final Fantasy Adventure on Gameboy, it's the same game I just used the name I know it as. Sorry for the confusion lol
I have no clue what Final Fantasy Legends is tho

I don't want to overhype the game or anything, maybe it's not THAT good, it's more clunky than Link's Awakening, but I don't know, somehow I remember it very fondly.

Thank you both, I did the two-second research, but I clearly didn't look hard enough.

The improvements to Embers of Mana sound great. A bit off-topic, but I do plan to do a playthrough of the GB original Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest (EU) at some point. (Note to self: theadamrippon just released colorizations of the GB FF games.) I barely remember anything about it, when's the best time to save? I'll take any random tips.
