"Quest 64" recompilation project is now available in alpha stages

Nintendo 64 decompilation projects have gained a lot of traction, and with tools like N64 Recomp available to the public, the process of creating a PC port and binary executable for any given Nintendo 64 decompilation project became easier thanks to it.

While some games have proper PC ports yet to be made from scratch, other have seen the implementation of the Recompilation tool in order to be able to compile and create a running executable of the decompiled N64 game working in their computers, and the latest one to get a recompilation is the N64 exclusive RPG title, Quest 64.

The recompilation project for Quest 64 by Rainchus is in very early stages, currently at v0.1, but the overall game is now playable as a PC port, with some new features added in, but still with some of those features being in alpha stages at the moment, with those alpha features being worked on and ironed out in the meanwhile, and surely more features will come down the line once the initial features are properly implemented.

Here's some of the features that the Quest 64 Recomp has at the moment of writing:
  • Borrows the launcher from Star Fox 64 Recomp, but plays the US version of Quest 64
  • Interpolation is not perfect, but mostly fine at 60hz (Brian's hair flickers when running)
  • Widescreen is also not perfect but mostly fine
  • Pressing F1 allows for changing a bunch of the settings
Those interested in trying out this recompilation of Quest 64, can do so by visiting Rainchus' repository for the project, and compiling the project on their PC. As with each and every decompilation and recompilation project, the user is required to provide their own ROM of the game (Quest 64), in order to be able to extract all of the copyrighted assets from it for the compilation, as none of the repositories include any kind of copyrighted assets.

I am really surprised Conker has all but been forgotten about seemingly

I thought it would be one of the first decomps after OOT due to that

The OG Xbox release ruined it
Apart from skipping around the game using chapters and watching the cutscenes, it just isn't fun to play

I'm kind of tempted to make a genuine attempt at this game. These recompilations are awesome, and Quest 64 is supposedly only about 10 hours long.

I still remember being a kid and seeing the Nintendo Power articles. The game was hyped for its day-night cycle, which (don't laugh) was a big deal back in the day. (It predated Ocarina of Time's day-night cycling, if I recall correctly.) It brings back memories just thinking about it.

I watched a YouTube review (wish I remembered who) on Quest 64 detailing unfinished areas and assets that were just out of place

Maybe someone will make a project to expand on those unfinished areas

There seems to be an increasing amount of N64 decompilations. Is it due to increased interest in the system at this point or is it a case of shared code assets or something between games, where they're able to use stuff already done for other games so they aren't starting from scratch?

Nintendo 64 games are significantly easier to approach because, to my (limited) understanding, N64 games used compilers for most of the code and it allows for a predictable basis of reversing the majority of the games. The https://github.com/N64Recomp/N64Recomp tool allows for a considerable amount of work to be done, whereas for older systems like NES and the like, more was done by hand, so less routines to easily statically analyze.

The original ROM already has a randomizer/updater thing, if you missed the news.

If other recompilation projects are any indication, this will probably not lead to a huge resurgence in modding the game, but who knows..?

I understand the basis for N64 high-level emulation is that many of them used the same microcode for the RSP. So, rather than emulating the RSP directly, emulators could just return the expected result of those microcode functions – at the expense of accuracy when it came to anything that tried to use custom microcode. I presume something similar is going on with these recompilations.

I wish I had a good reference; I found https://www.retroreversing.com/n64rsp , but I'm not sure if that's just AI slop (sigh).

Give us Ogre Battle 64 and Conker!

Also, the Perfect Dark PC port is great, I just beat the campaign last night!

And yes, I'm shilling a free PC port in this thread!
If you guys want something Conker related, there was this... It's not much, but features Conker.

RIP, little bastard feller.

Why?

Why decompile an unfinished game that is definitely not that popular?

Eh probably because there is not that many English N64 games to start with.

A few N64 groups like to meme about Quest 64 being the best game on the N64, or even the best game of all time.

I wonder, when every game is decompiled and recompiled, will that be the preferred way to play them and not on a real console or by fpga.

wow... i mean, yeah, cool, but damn. I could think of a lot more games way more deserving than that one.

EDIT: wow, that video says "finally" in the title... were people waiting for this??
