People enjoy a gondola ride on the Grand Canal, where the canal's water was dyed green

Here we go again, another protestor committing property damage, with Greta and some 35 Extinction Rebellion protesters releasing bright green dye into the city’s Grand Canal over the weekend.

Dressed in red cloaks and veiled faces, their "demonstrations" were timed to coincide with the conclusion of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil and were meant to “draw attention to the massive effects of climate collapse,” according to them.

Even though the dye they claim was environmentally harmless, using a biodegradable compound, local officials were still (understandably) pissed, with Luca Zaia, governor of the Veneto region calling the stunt “a disrespectful act towards our city, its history and its fragility," warning the risk of environmental damage.

Shockingly, the group has already done similar actions to ten other Italian cities, with rivers, lakes, and fountains dyed green to highlight their climate concerns, but even worse, they only got a 48 hour ban with a fine of €150.

Good on her. How many here are willing to risk prison for what you believe in.
Yeah because like good ol' vandalism will fix the environment!

Just to be clear, you do know the water will become deoxygenated since light can't get in through the dye for the plants at the bottom to produce oxygen, killing whatever's living down there

Sure the canal was already polluted before this happened, but if you want the government to fix it so soon, why make their jobs harder by making the situation worse that'll slow down their progress?

Well, this is new, fervour for stopping pollution. 'Til now, this has been noticeably lacking. Who is this Greta? Why is she different? You right-wings produce Pariahs by the sack full.

May as well not protest by doing anything that may slightly inconvenience authority

Also I don't think the canal was the point but a medium, looking further into it this was a reaction to the Italy being opposed to include fossil fuel restrictions. So not really anything related to the water being dirty or smth, more like just vandalizing an important part to call attention, which I don't really have a problem with, specially since it's not really permanent

MAGA pearl clutching at property damage and vandalism is just hilarious given that they're responsible for a majority of it.
I'm sorry, remind me again what happened back in June?

I find it very funny y'all are immediately escalating this by blaming to the right-wing when it wasn't mentioned at all here

The goal of this post is to show what not to do when doing an environmental protest

You proved his point 👇
Quick how can we get mad a Trump over this?

Which is why they still continue doing this if everyone has given up giving a shit

48 hours and 130 euros. That's not a punishment, it's just a price tag. (or whatever the quote was)

Oh no, not the notoriously polluted rivers of Venice! How will they ever recover from a temporary change of color from a non-toxic biodegradable dye?
You think they be more effective to target sites of mass industrialization or political decision making, but instead would rather target cultural/ historical sites. They could choose to target more appropriate places yet continue to choose not to.

Let me ask you this, what correlation does throwing soup at the Mona Lisa have to the air pollution?

You misunderstand, this action harmed the environment more. It impacts the ability for DMS to be produced by phytoplankton. DMS is crucial for cooling the planet, it helps make clouds fuller and more reflective. This means less heat from the sun is absorbed by Earth. Which means the planet is being cooled; this is a good thing for the environment.

The color and sheer amount of dye blocks light from reaching organisms in the water; this negatively impacts the production of oxygen and DMS. The lack of oxygen further impacts the production of DMS.

Good intentions do not wave the harm this action caused. To raise awareness about pollution is to help prevent pollution. To cause environmental harm is to further pollution.

Besides, by successfully turning huge chunks of the canal green, and videos showing them dumping large quantities, you think they might've overdid it with the dye? Too much of anything is still bad

Do you have a source for this image for one, but also I'm not surprised you're still hung up on this false equivalency too.
Ignoring everything I've said on the rest of the post just says it all for you

You think a protest that targets a "site of mass industrialization" would be more impactful than a protest that targets one of the largest tourist hotspots in the country?

The planet is not going to die because a bunch of activist decided to temporally paint a canal green (Assuming the dye is indeed eco-friendly. If they messed that up then yeah weird stuff)

Either way this type of stunts need to be more and more polemic and eccentric because the more time it passes the more people seem to not even blink at the idea of how we are walking the path to our anhilation

No no no, a source directly tied to that image you posted. Please try to keep up, rather than scrabble Google to try to find sources that don't actually back your claim.

How embarrassing for you

Then do it professionally, no one's gonna take you seriously if you're a nuisance to random citizens

Would people donate more money to me if I had a monkey following them with a sign that says "Murder is wrong" than educating them properly???
