We have switched to a new ad network. Please use this thread to report any browsing issues specifically caused by ads on GBAtemp.

Most ads include a "Report Ad" button so please use it to report any issues with ad content. There's no need to post about it on the forums, as we'll just direct you to that button.

Also, please keep in mind that these ads arent there just for the fun of it. We need revenue to keep servers going, to allow some staff to get (small) payments to keep the site alive, and giveaways, contests etc.

I would much rather have this indeed, but no one has ever asked for this, so I don't think we would go very far with that.
TBQH, SomethingAwful has a very distinct monetization aspect on their forums.
Paying to change your avatar, others' avatar, to access DMs, registering even etc.

I can see that working with a larger userbase, but it's too disruptive overall, and it tends to attract wealthy trolls.
It's been years since I've last logged in there, but I just browsed the Let's Play forums, which did have some amazing topics.

Make it an option. Add value like: "If an user wants to advertise something, pay the AD for Front Page."
Or make it a Patreon quirk. Only a certain Patron Tier can allow an user to advertise their products + automatic front page after Admin/Supervisor approval, like checking if not a scam, anything illegal and other shenanigans.
If the user fails at their ad being irrelevant, there's no loss for neither.

I agree, we have a lot of incredibly talented users making cool projects, I too would rather see ads from GBATEMP members, rather than ... whatever.

The new Adblock blocker is a bit aggressive.
We are working on solving that, it's something the ad network set up, it's not happening to everyone so we didn't know about it.
One person in the staff just had it happen so we were able to capture videos and collect details to send to the ad network.

You only need revenue to keep the servers going, staff here are useless. No one cares about your giveaways & contest. The staff, giveaways, contest aren't responsible for the traffic that this website receives. No one comes here to read your crappy little paid reviews. The only reason anyone comes here is because of DEVELOPERS that actually contribute. If anyone should be getting small payments, it's the developers not the staff.

That’s not good news because the temps been my gaming home since the get go. I had another account before this one but I went away a while and came back but forgot all my log in details so in 2010 I created this account which has been with me ever since and it’s been a ride.. wow I’ve been involved in some let say big things in my time and management have done good things for me let’s hope all this changes. I do blame the new Google AI in certain circumstances like this because it only says what the majority are searching for in answers.

This is probably the last mainstream forum I still visit. Being a member since 2009 and even longer by pure lurking, its a shame its also slowly falling down. Ads are not the solution unfortunately, it will only drive people away. Having the site being unusable is not a good thing.

As many have mentioned, if there's some sort of progress bar at the home page that says "x out of y donated for month z" it would already encourage some people to donate, since they know it will support the site. It won't be enough probably, but any bits help.

On a different note, I am really surprised to hear the staff gets paid here. Can't say I have heard that in recent times just for moderating. Very lucky of them, but that do add to this money problem.

Why not make a YouTube channel and get volunteers to host it. Video Game Esoterica seems to have time to make long videos every day and keeps up with all the latest minutia about his corner of the scene. Somehow he makes money doing that, GBA Temp could do the same. The website and forums does all the research so it would be an easy gig if you already knew how to make videos in the first place.

need to chime in too. I fully get the necessity of a revenue stream.
However if you are making so insanely horrible to browse the site without a premium account and with an adblocker installed (which no one remotely sane will every compromise on), might as well go full paid website like theverge.

In the current state, gbatemp is going to nuke in ranking.

You claim nobody it's hard to get ads, and then flood the home page with ads?

This seems like everyone else who claims they can't pay server bills anymore and that people should donate.

Your staff has gotten extremely lazy and the articles they put out are worse than AI articles. Get better writers for better content.

I'd never give you guys a cent after complaining about the lack of advertisers and then putting an ad after every break on the homepage.

This site's been going downhill for years. I'm pretty sure you just put the final nail in the coffin.

The fix is to switch to a different network. Ad-Shield is known for doing exactly this, chances are they will not relent.

GBAtemp t-shirts absolutely exist. I designed one some time back! It's in my forum sig!
I can't remember the last time they were actually promoted, though. Would be cool to see those bumped up on the front page as a means to help support the site.
This and other merch.

We're talking hats, keyrings, mouse mats, mugs... PS5 shells 😂😂😂

Nah seriously... Merch!

The ads are making the site terribly slow.
Thought it was my phone, but now I'm in my "PC" (Laptop) and it's equally slow.

I don't mind fucking ads of bullshit I don't even buy/consume, but at least make the site work as fluid as it once was.

Also, what if instead of relying as much on ad revenue, you setup a way for a distributed traffic/CDN, where members can host a portion of the site's heavy bandwidth content. Where after people end us helping out, there is a lot less traffic to the main site (as resources like pictures and so forth are pulled from self hoster's "nodes".
