I'm using a Wii U with the enhanced vWii plugin and I'm trying to play Red Steel with USB loader GX, I've tried altering all relevant settings but the game seems to display heavily pillarboxed, which is normal sometimes, but I've never seen it so bad, and the top and bottom are display quite normally with no underscan or anything. The image actually looks too narrow, all circular objects appear that way. Is there anyway I could get the game to display in actual 16:9?

I think the vWii plugin only works with injected games, I don't have my console at the moment, but if I remember right you need to set video width to framebuffer and set Wii U wide screen to ON, setting deflicker filter to off (extended) should also help with image quality.

I've tried those latter two options to no avail, I do use the deflicker one often though.
I think this is a problem with the game since other games look fine otherwise. I'm pretty sure the vWii plugin works regardless because the stock output cuts off the overscan area while the evWii plugin restores it, and as I sit here on my Wii menu there is indeed some underscan (I think that's how I phrase that, basically I can see black bars surrounding every edge of the properly scaled 16:9 image)
I ought to try and inject too but I'm not too optimistic outside of the ability to cut out overscan areas to the pixel instead of stretching them which is what I'd like for a proportionate image
I used no reference so I'm working off a hunch as for the game being too narrow, but on the title screen, the wiimote safety screen, ubisoft FMV it all looks a bit too narrow. And with Dolphin I can see that's the intended behavior.

Using stretch to window on Dolphin in the 1st image shows that it does look more correct if you add a stretch

That amount of overscan seems normal, mine looks like that too, from my understanding, framebuffer makes the image wide screen but doesn't change the resolution, so that's why it doesn't cover the entire screen.

What you can do is set the width and height to manual, and just change the values so that the image covers the entire screen (I saw a post covering the exact values like 2 years ago, but can't seem to find it), but since the resolution isn't really changing the image will look slightly blurry and stretched.

Sounds good, as is the nature of the Wii anyway, all of it's widescreen is anamorphic so it'll always look sharper in 4:3 (which is letterboxed for this game anyway and they got the aspect ratio wrong... It's funny too cause the game plays like a trailer with real footage of a guy playing the game and if you stretch it to an actual 16:9 window the gameplay segments still have that same pillarboxing, and without it the game would look twice as narrow which goes to show it truly was a mistake)
Though there is one more problem being that the video width setting just has auto and framebuffer options, no way to manually adjust it, and there's no height option either

Edit: Checked the PAL release and they seem to have largely improved it but there's still a small amount of pillarboxing but I guess this puts it in the realm of normal wii games

I think the NTSC version outputs it's framebuffer res cause when I tried that setting there was no change
