New mod called Fallout: Bakersfield aims to recreate Fallout 1 in DOOM's engine

The Fallout series is no stranger to mods--even prior to its days running on the easily-modded Bethesda Studios Gamebryo engine, dedicated fans have been creating projects since the 1990s. The latest fanwork comes from "Red888guns", or Alexander Berezin, who is attempting to take a section from Fallout 1 and recreate it in FPS style using DOOM's engine. Berezin has a history with modding Fallout, having worked on Fallout: Sonora and Olympus 2207, both massive modifications to Fallout 2.

This project, titled Fallout: Bakersfield, has received a trailer showcasing the massive work put into taking DOOM 1993's style and mixing it with the aesthetic of the original Fallout game. The trailer goes through iconic parts of the city of Necropolis, featuring gory mutilations, dialog with a Super Mutant, and the highly stylized post apocalyptic look of the California wasteland. At the end of the video, it teases a release window for the GZDoom WAD for sometime in 2027.

Since we're all pals here, I'm gonna be real with you.
Fallout is a mega cringe Reddit franchise to me. The vibe, the world-building, the aesthetic, the memes, the everything.
It's just off-putting to me for some reason.
But this looks really well made in those constraints.
Like, if I were a Fallout fan, this would be really exciting.

I could maybe understand hating FO 3 and 4, but new vegas and the preceding games? Have you played them - or you just hate them because they're popular?

I played Fallout 2 as a kid and liked it back then.
But I can't see myself going back to it now.
And also Fallout 3 when it came out and felt it was meh even back then.

I know that some of the Fallout games are generally considered good even among more critical people.
Me considering Fallout cringe is not some logical thing, just feeling-based.

I don't get the prejudice towards Fallout 1 and 2. They're fantastic games that hold up extremely well. The brutal difficulty is a feature guys
I mean, it doesn't help when the games barely run even in the GOG release. Hours of research to find Fallout Fixt and the Restoration Patch or the new decompilation projects. The UI takes some adjusting to understand the jank. The Trials at the start of 2 are horrific for noobs. I love the games to death but I get why younger players are hesitant to bother.

Oh hot dang that looks good.
Hope they release a demo sometime this year.
Hope they get a spot on the Cacowards, probably likely.
Such amazing work already.
