I have quite a collection of Japanese PS1 discs, and I used to have a PS1 that I played them on. Unfortunately, due to some stupid decisions I made, I don't have a PS1 anymore, just a PS2. It's a 70002 slim model, that came with a Matrix modchip I have a PS2 Slim 70002, with a Matrix modchip (I don't know the exact model of the chip, it shipped with the console). When I put in a PS1 disc, it either recognizes it as a PS2 disc, and freezes to black when it tries to open the disc, or it recognizes it as a PS1 game, but goes to the "Please insert a PS or PS2 format disc" red error screen. I currently don't have enough to get a new PS1, so is there any way to play my PS1 games on my PS2?

A good indication as to what chip you're dealing with, is by holding down Circle and Triangle on the first controller whilst powering on the console. If it brings up a configuration menu, that means you have a Matrix Infinity or its clones (i.e., Modbo); it'll tell you the logo, FW version number, and model. If no such menu appears, either you have an MX4 or some other Matrix chip.

Full way of knowing what chip is installed, is by opening up the console. Considering that you have a slim model, shouldn't be too difficult to open up. I recommend doing the teardown step-by-step with an iFixIt guide.

you could always go the softmod route use opentuna then Fmcb to Play just Backups of your games or After opentuna use mechapwn if you dont want to convert your games to vcd

There's that, but the OP may not have the skills to remove the modchip once it is installed. Removing it requires a good amount of precision, and by that, I mean desoldering each end of the wire one-by-one on some very tiny points with there being a risk of screwing up. If the chip is already dead, then the OP can reuse the wires installed and swap the chip over for a Modbo.

Only good use case with a modchip, is that you can play most of your backup and/or imported games without patching disc images for homebrew such as ESR or running them through OPL. Modchips are only there for nostalgia, and since then, softmods are easily accessible than before.

I think it says it's a v3.1m or something

Is it such that there are modchips that allow me to play the Japanese PS1 discs, on a PAL console like mine?

With mechapwn there is no need to Patch Images anymore like you need for esr you can Play anything from any region like a modchip could

I would really love to use Mechapwn from what I've seen of it, but the problem is my PS2 seems to be a PAL region from the model I checked in the browser (SCPH-70002). I've heard that Mechapwn on PAL regions doesn't region unlock PS1 games. Is this true?

Sorry for the Late reply but I had to Look it up myself since I dont had to mingle with mechapwn on pal consoles for a Long time

on mechapwn reasearch it stated that on pal 70k consoles it is only possible with a swap Trick you have to burn and use the ImportPlayer Lite 2.1 pal in combination with DKWDRV
