That’s one way to look at things. It *is* a tug of war, undoing what your predecessors have implemented is always part of the ticket. Not really a statement on Bill Maher specifically, rather on politics in general. An actual moderate would be a rather boring proposition for a public official, what people *really* like is going in one direction until they feel they’ve gone too far, then turning on their heel and walking right back until they feel they overcorrected and need to pivot again, ad infinitum. I’m not sure if I’d call that centrism, rather it’s a natural inclination towards thinking the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The water in the bathtub is never “just right” - if you feel like it is, it’ll be too cold in a couple minutes.Well for the Bill Maher example, people like him actually have beliefs but are clearly right wing, they just pretend to be left wing to be contrarians, to both the left and right. Most of his speech is blaming the left and excusing the right actions as a reaction to the left "overreaction".
