The Switch 1 had this exact same thing with update 2.0.0. But this check appears to just be for NS1 backwards compatibility so it may just be downloading the latest build of their backwards compatibility layer.

It's likely not just for switch 1, but people don't have switch 2 games to test.

That's actually fair, which in that case lots of people are making the assumption from not having seen the box (including me).
We'll see.

In that case though, I think someone wouldn't have to update, since I find switch 1 games aren't the most important.

They are still actively updating their backwards compatibility layer. And seeing they just had a major update report on it yesterday I assume they don't want people using some super outdated or unfinished build of it.

Regarding switch one games, maybe it simply means future games (like MP4 ect) May need a firmware version 20.00+ to run. Like if i threw in my launch copy of botw it should play fine.
Guess well have to wait to confirm for ourselves.

Was just being cautious because of the similar names.

I guess I won't be updating my NS2 when I have it in my possession, I'll keep it on the original firmware and use an NS1 to play NS1 games I bought.

If Nintendo wants people to really update it, there's probably something for the hackers to find.

What's to be confused about? The Switch 2 isn't a completely new device with a completely new firmware/OS. That screen shot pretty much confirms that they simply added support for the Switch 2 hardware to the existing HOS codebase. The update being required is likely 20.1.0. This should further enforce to people that there are not going to be software exploits anytime soon.

I imagine they share a central design, but not nearly close enough where one could swap the OS from Switch 2 into a Switch 1. The GPU alone is of a completely different architecture. Not even PS4 Pro differs from PS4 in that regard.

All I know is that Sony confirmed and still goes by the standard that any of the detachable drives need a 1 time server check.

I don't know the current state but I bought a PS5 slim last year and an online check was required even though it was the disc-based slim model.

The one I mentioned was like March of this year, so could be that they're easing up.
