While the FAQ for Switch/Switch 2 accessoires clearly states that the Switch 2 will not be compatible with the dock of the original Switch, there was no information the other way around.
Surely would have made sense to make the tablet compatible at least, even if the joycons don't fit in the dock as well. Many people who buy the Switch 2 will still have the old one and with the video output through USB-C being so similar, it wasn't impossible that the dock of the Switch 2 could also be used for the old Switch.

Since there was no information to be found about it, I just asked Nintendo. This is the response I got:

Dear customer,

Thank you for contacting the Nintendo Contact Center Europe team.

We understand from your message that you would like to know if you can use the old Nintendo Switch in the dock of the new Switch 2.

The docking station for Switch 2 is not compatible with the Switch console.

Not surprising if the HDMI out will be HDMI 2.1 with most 4k standards nowdays. On a side note: wonder how many Nintendo fans will buy the new Switch 2 without having a 4k TV, to only think, "this looks the same to me"
I have a 1080p TV, but I reckon I'll just use it in handheld mode most of the time, anyway.

I'd still expect Switch 2 games to look noticeably better, since very few Switch 1 games got anywhere near 1080p in docked mode

it claims it can do 4k but i have yet to see one game that runs in it https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSw...ario_kart_world_runs_at_1440p_in_docked_mode/ you've all been lied to once again
Before you turn this into one of you infamous shitfests, let's get back to topic, shall we?

There is no technical reason that the new dock wouldn't take the old one, since HDMI 2.1 is indeed backwards compatible. Maybe there will be a third party option in the future that allows for swapping old and new console in the same dock. I'm just running out of HDMI slots on my TV, that's the issue.

well if that's the only issue, just replace your Switch with the Switch 2. Unless you're one of those weirdos that enjoys LABO or RingFit, you'll still have all your Switch 1 content available to you.

My Switch is hacked, Switch 2 will not be. That's why I would like to have the possibility to have them both hooked up. An HDMI Switch with two inputs, one output would be the easiest answer to that.

Honestly this is going to be something people will just have to try. Since it's a translation we don't know if it's the difference between "Not supported" and "Won't work". As we know there is a litany of unsupported HDMI docks for the Switch and while the're not "supported" they do work mostly.

Not to mention that lots of those have 4k hardware and can be used with more than just Switch 1, so there's next to zero reason to assume they won't work with S2 or that it's dock can't be filed down some to physically accept S1.

Nintendo themselves stated it will not work. Not sure if trying will help.

If Nintendo wanted it probably could be compatible, but they want people to buy the new Switch.

For me, if games on Handheld Mode are in 1080/60 then I'm satisfied and won't use the Dock Mode. I did buy a third party Joy-Con NS2 Chargeable Grip Controller so I'll have a controller I can use for TV gaming.

NS2 Pro Controller looks mostly the same as NS1PC, with a new C button (wake mode) and back buttons (never cared for that).

NS2PC doesn't have analog triggers so, meh, pass.

Might try to buy a GCN NS2 if I can find.

yeah i will say that because my projector will have output max 1080px only, my room don't have a place to put TV thats the reason i buy projector 1080p but it have decode 4K, still waiting someday will make projector with 4K output but i think 1080px its already good enough, i hate high quality graphic though it make my eye hurt, even SwitchV1 i prefer play in handheld mode.

A customer service monkey stated in another language that it won't work. CS people can and will say anything to close the ticket. They most certainly aren't going to say it works if it isn't in the marketing material. In many cases for us english natives things are often "not supported" but do indeed still work. I doubt it will take long for someone to try and get a confirmation after the thing is released. Also hinges on your definition of "doesn't work". Will the Switch physically fit the dock? Will the ports line up? What if you use a USB C extension to connect the console? Nintendo will give none of these details as they don't care. They want to sell new stuff. Thus their answer will always be "it doesn't work" but we'll never know until we try.
